Im planning to buy this week, what do you think would impress me more,

a new HD 650 unamped (would get an amp in 2 months or so)

or

my existing HD 600s with a XP-7?

Any replies will be appreciated

Are you generally happy with the 600s? Then I'd go for the amp. If not, the HD650s.

Unless you already own both a great high-end source and at least a good $500~$1000 amp, then I would say fuggiddabout the HD650. You won't achieve anywhere near that phone's full potential with even a middle-of-the-road source. I'd definitely get an amp first, then upgrade your source(s) - and then, lastly, get the HD650.

For the moment the amp will give you more fun. I for one would go for the HD 650 (in the end). But also your source should be part of the strategy and match up with the rest.

I'd get the amp now and the HD650's as soon as possible. Why are you going with the portable amp?

Both of these headphones need an amp to shine, some of the mebers will vote for the HD650, some for HD600, both sound a bit different so one, is not the replacmeent for the other, IMO you need to hear both and decided which is best suited for you, and then get an amp for any you choose......

I have to agree with others. I would take HD600+amp over HD650+no amp in a heart beat. Without an amp, HD6x0 sounds just plain wrong. Also a descent source is must to make them really sing (amplifying PCDPs headphone out will sound flat/lifeless). I know many of us make a big deal out of difference between HD600 vs. HD650, but without a descent source/amp, you will negate the advantage of HD650. If I had a choice between descent source (dedicated CD player perhaps)+good amp+HD600 vs. not-so-great source/amp+HD650, I would definitely go over the first. Price difference between HD600 and HD650 alone will get you a pretty descent universal player or good redbook only player.
