But yeah...there is a HUGE difference between a new HD-650 and a nicely used one with around 200 - 300 hours on it

I also got to hear a new HD-650 out of the box (my friends here are falling for the HeadFi trap) and it sounded soooo sh!t that I told them my headphones were away with a headfier on loan (just in case they asked me for mine to AB)

I wouldn't pay much attention to their sound until they hit at least 200 hours, before that there were some times when I wanted to throw them in the trash.

Funny... seems to me the 580/600 has a much shorter burn-in time (mine were already smoothing out treble-wise after about 12 hours, altho it took longer for bass to open up).

I have never burned a pair of 600s in, mine were used. I have never heard they took as long though, it's mostly a 650 thing...

When mine first hit they were extremely dark sounding and the treble was really lacking. The bass came and went twice. It's here in a big way now and the treble is the part I like best about the phones, tons of air and a sparkle I just love. I'm not really sure how much of the burn in was the cans and how much was the ZU cable. Probably a combo of the two. I had the Zu on them from day one, and both were new. The treble never was harsh like the 600 can get. It just seemed out of balance with the rest of the sound at first.

Trust me, you don't want to know, but if you really want to meet him put up a thread named "Stax: the Worst Headphones Ever, I Wouldn't Let My Dog Wear Them!" in the headphones section. That'll get you acquainted!

+ there's a particular " right music for burning " (as the pink noise) i should burn them with ?
volume set to ?

It doesn't really matter what signals you use, normal music is good enough, with some heavy bass to force the membrane to travel. I play it very loud for break-in, even with cranked up bass (to accelerate the process, because that's what break-in is actually for) but take care to avoid distortion.

Well then I guess I have an answer to my question. How do yours sound now, and what gear do you use with them?
