hello,

i am looking into buying a Sennheiser HD650 with a Meier CANTATE for using it with a macbook pro.
i mainly listen to Rock (around 70%), the other 30% however contain alot of different genres (except hiphop and electronic music).

is the combination in itself bad (senns+cantate), could i get more for my money and is the combintation for my listening habits good ?
i read a couple of threads saying the senns arent too bad for rock and that one should definitely not pick the akg 701 for that genre - reason i picked the senns.

and: i rather buy european products, being from europe myself, thats why i looked for the meier and senns. importing an RSA might be too risky (VAT+customs) to be really worth it.

thanks in advance

I have no experience with that amp. However, the HD650 is good for slower, less dense/aggressive rock. Pink Floyd and the like sounds absolutely marvellous on it. In fact, anything that has been recorded on the lean/bright side (and most rock is) sounds very good on the HD650.

However, as the music gets faster and more dense, the HD650's slowness tends to manifest itself, and resolution/microdetail retreival is lost. Of course, you have to torture-test the HD650 with something really brutally fast and agressive (like Nile) in order for this to become immediately apparent.

So, I think it will be fine for most, and excellent for classic rock.

problem is that grado doesn't want US retailers to sell their phones to european customers, so i don't want to get into the hassle with warranty etc.

so i take it you have/had the HD650? Did you use an amp - if so, which one?
