I don't know if this is of any help, but I've tried different cables on an HD650 and didn't find it made a particularly substantial difference.

I agree, the cables change the sound a bit so you know somthing is going on. But different is not always better.

Head-direct contact button does not work nor does the checkout.

FWIW, I have a Stefan Audioart Equinox cable that is 4' long and terminates in a 1/8" miniplug for sale. Cost is $165 shipped anywhere in the USA. It DOES sound better than the stock cable.

I do not doubt that the Stefan cable sounds better. However, if you cut the stock 650 cable to 4 feet rather than 10 feet and used premium connectors the stock cable would also improve.

You can get refurbed 580's that look as new online for $123. My problem is with the cost of these aftermarket cables. Today you can get CT silver interconnects with 6 feet of cable and 4 nice RCA's for $40. I am looking at a new 650 cable upgrade that looks nice for around $70 that may be worth it and will report on after I burn it in.

I agree, either reterminate stock for the shorter length you need ( you'll just have a short cord) or save up and buy a used aftermarket cable. I have heard several and prefer Moon Audio BD's. IMHO, you will not hear the 650's full potential until recabled. From there you can take them to the next level by going balanced!
