I'd like to buy a cable for my 650s, around 3-4 feet long and terminating in a 1/8" plug. The cheapest one I have found so far is the headphile one, but that is 100 dollars, and I could buy some pretty decent cans for that kind of cash. I chopped my own cable and reterminated it, but I think I did a pretty sloppy job, so I'd like a professional job. Any suggestions? I saw something called an Oelbach or something like that, but haven't been able to find too much information about it/where to buy one.

There are people here who will reterminate your stock cable for you for a small fee.

The oelbach were made by a member of head-fi wich have stop producing it. I am in the same boat as you with the aftermarket cable. Good luck to both of us hehe.

If you've got the 650s, you owe it to yourself (and the 650s) to save your dollars for some good cables. The Cardas cables start at around $200...not too far from where you're at. I honestly don't think budget cables will give you the potential that the 650s have. Save, and go for the good stuff!

This may be blasphemy on this forum, but I do not believe that cables can improve the sound of my headphones signicantly (if at all). And if they could, I don't think I could justify spending 200 dollars on just the cable when I could buy a new set of cans for that much.

I mean no disprespect, its just my own personal opinion.

With all due respect I have to vehemently disagree with the assertion that aftermarket cables don't improve the sound of HD 650s. I can only speak to the difference between the stock cable and Zu Mobius-- it is night and day. I was a true skeptic until I heard it myself.

The difference is far from subtle. Whether or not that difference is worth the cost is another matter. I believe it is. If your budget would ever lead you consider Grado RS-1's then the Senns + aftermarker cable is comparable in cost. My Zu+Senns costs less than Grado RS-1s.

I personally consider the Zu+Hd650 combo superior to RS-1 for most listening (there are specific types of music or instruments for which I consider the RS-1s superior).

My 2 cents.

I do not think that I will be purchasing any more open type headphones, nor do I think that my budget will allot for more money spent on just the headphones. So at this point, while I might be wrong (still unconvinced) I'm not willing to invest that much into the cable, except for build quality/durability.

try one first before you come to any conclusions.

I concur. Not based on electrical data; I don't care about that stuff either. I base my finding on direct comparisons and personal experience.

Hmm. that looks interesting, but there is no contact page. 6 ft is still a little long for me, 3-4 ft would be a lot better.

Also, if I had the money to try it, I'd probably just keep it and this thread wouldn't exist.

I don't know if this is of any help, but I've tried different cables on an HD650 and didn't find it made a particularly substantial difference. Sighted tests are extremely difficult to make reliable, as auditory 'memory' isn't particularly reliable due to both psychological and physiological factors. This is something that makes comparison difficult in general, and is probably one of the major problems to deal with even in blind testing. Proper blind tests use a large number of passes to try to mitigate the problem, and I find blind tests in general are more reliable for this type of comparison. Anyhow, this was simply my impression. I'm no stranger to listening tests, though, and have tried cable comparisons multiple times. Sometimes I've gotten what may have been subtle differences, but it was never enough to really be certain, to the degree for which I'd be confident in the result.

Anyhow, I agree with you about price/performance ratio in a cable upgrade. Unless you're absolutely committed to pouring everything you have into HD650s, I imagine you can use the money towards improving something else. When I look at my stuff, cable upgrades are among the very last things I'd consider spending on versus other things. There is so much out there that, in my opinion and experience, exceeds the impact of a cable that I probably won't reach the point where it becomes the most economically viable upgrade. It sounds like you're finding, more or less, the same as myself.

Therefore, I think it makes sense to simply seek out the most economical repair solution and focus your funds on other gear, if that's even what you want to spend the money on (don't feel like you have to!).
