HD600 vs. DT770 Pro

DT770/80 can be fun. I preferred the '05 DT770/250, was more balanced in the sound to me.

HD600 is, as people said, very good all-rounder and is fairly neutral with most stuff.

Infected mushroom on HD600 will probably be boring compared to the DT770/80 along with most electronica, esp. However, it might be be better for radiohead and the like.

Also DT770/80 + PA2V2 is not a good match-up, I had this combo, and it was a little too warm; makes sense since the PA2V2 lends a warm sound sig.

The HD580/600/650 have the advantage of scaling more with better gear.

I liked HD580/600 better than DT770 on a few kinds of amps I owned. I still liked them better without dedicated amplification. So I think it really comes down to what kind of sound signature you want.

HD600 in a landslide. The DT770's was the only headphone I owned that I really hated. It was alright for Hip-hop/Rap, but for everything else it was muddy and miserable.

I'm sure if I had a really good source and amp they would have improved a bit, but all in all I just don't think the DT770's are a headphone to build anything around.

I was thinking the same thing but a few members feel that DT770/600ohm is different animal with much better controlled bass without recessed mids and piercing highs. They think it is worth to build a system around it. I personally have no experience with 600 ohm though.

The '05/Consumer and the normal 'Pro' versions of the DT770s are different beasts altogether, IMO. Apparently the '05 600ohm versions fixes some of the shortfalls in the '05 250ohm version, i.e. the screechy highs and allows for more bass extension, not necessarily quantity. Don't get me wrong, they're far from a neutral headphone (I have a K601 for that) but they are definitely fun with the right music. That being said, I would not get it if one were to keep just one headphone.

So for the best ALL-AROUNDER, what's best with my PA2V2?

yes, they sound a lot more natural. they suit me fine, for what it's worth.

I posted my impressions here, if that can help the OP : http://www.head-fi.org/forums/5506048-post4.html

I don't know if it's synergy with the Audio-gd Compass or the fact that they have about 600 hours on them or that I like strong bass flavor or what, but my DT770's sound better than what most give them credit for. Perhaps most bashers have never heard them fully burned in and properly sourced/amped, plus I find them amazingly comfortable. I also don't get the whole "Laid-Back/Veiled" thing about the HD650s (I've never heard the 600s) To me, they sound just powerful and lush, also with very strong bass, and I only had an extended listen at an audio store out of an integrated amp. I was directly comparing them to my own DT770s, HD595s and Grado SR325is and RS1s. The sound of the HD650s was just "bigger, richer" than all those others.

To the OP - the things that I would consider are closed vs open, impedance, comfort (I found the HD650s clamped my head big time (although I've read that can be taken care of), sound signature and price. If at all possible listen to them first.
