This is a chance for everyone who prefers the HD600, over the HD650, to express your reasons for staying, or just liking the HD600 better!

What are the ups, and downs of each set, according to what you have heard!

I am thinking about going back to the HD600, for good this time, and any input from you HD600 followers, would be greatly appreciated!

They may seem dark and muddy after listening to Grados, but that's what makes the HD650 so attractive. I've never heard the HD600, so I better be leaving now

EDIT: actually, muddy is not the right word... IMO the HD650 aren't muddy sounding. I'll go for dark and veiled.

Sometimes if I find the HD650 a little bass heavy, I switch to the HD600 and problem solved.

I dont think so. I had the 650, and once I heard the 600, the 650's were sent packing. The 600 has a more neutral and less bassy sound with an airier treble. I am not sure if the 650 has more treble roll off or if the extra bass of the 650 subjectively makes them appear darker and more rolled off. But the result is I find the 650's to sound congested in the upper bass/ lower midrange and the treble range seems dulled. In the end, I find the 600 both more transparent and less colored.

Like some have mentioned this applies to single ended operation .... going balanced the 650 makes a remarkable improvement. The dark, dulled and congested complaints evaporate. Comparing both ..... using the Singlepower Supra-XLR/ SFT dynamight for balanced operation ..... the 650 was the better sounding headphone. The 600 just doesnt change much while the 650 is transformed.

The 600 .... mine is equipped with a cardas cable ..... has a richer and more powerful sound. Vocals have added body and the bass is more impactful. Moreover, the 600 has a sense of ease and refinement the 701 doesnt quite replicate.

Finally, despite the 600's more recessed treble, I hear nuances to the 600's treble that 701 seems to gloss over. The 701 has a more prominent and extended treble so this is surprising.

I felt the same way about the two, and the 600 bass was also a bit better to my ears! I find the two quite similar in many ways, but I think I might actually prefer the HD600! Ask me why, and I just can't describe it!
