I'm looking to finally shell out the money for the HD600 and an associated amp which I haven't figured out what to get or how much I should spend. I plan to use it on my computer for gaming (since this is where I'll have the opportunity to use it the most) or I'll just use it for music.

I'm a newbie so I hope this doesn't sound too stupid. I have a stereo system. A pretty decent source in the Sony SCDC555ES which I currently have it connected to a receiver (might get an amp). Anyhow. I would prefer not to have to pull my cables from my receiver in order to connect the Sony to the headphone amp directly. But is that the only way I can do it?

So in terms of amp I want something that I would be happy with cause I don't forsee myself doing much in terms of upgrades except maybe buying an ultra portable one to connect to a discman for travel.

Would I still get the same enjoyment out of an amp by connecting it to a discman? Is it a good enough source? I'm currently looking at the Corda HA1 and HA2. And the Gilmore and Headroom Maxed out Home as frequently recommended here. Just wondering what would be a good bang for the buck. What would really be worth getting?

Well, the cordas and the gilmore are all known for their very good value. To answer your other question - no, a discman wouldn't do any of the mentioned amps justice.

No it won't, but IMO, it's still better than MP3's, etc.

Howie,

If you read the following thread "I Am In Your Hands - Pro Composer in Urgent Need of Amp Advice" you'll find a great deal of advice pertinent to your question. The thread is about a week old now. You'll find many forum responses recommending the Sennheiser HD600/Corda HA-2 combination and explaining why. On their advice and the links given in that thread, the HA-2 is now my leading choice to match up with my HD600's.

Good Luck - glasskangaroo

Hey The Corda HA-1 ROCKS. It's on sale for $290 assembled and it has crossfeed.

The disc man isn't the best it will work; you have to start somewhere.

A Line Out or Tape Out from your receiver will work for the input of the Corda. So you don't have to run the CD directly into it.

Run your computer to a line in on your receiver and your set for headphone bliss.

Howie,

If you have already decided to start with the HD600's, you are off to an excellent start.

My advice would be to contact Jan at Meyer Audio and ask him to quote you a price for a combination of Sennheiser HD600, Corda HA1 & Porta Corda, then you will have a home based system + portable system.
My personal experience in dealing with Jan is very positive, and the combo prices should be very good.

If the HA-2 is similar to the Corda Blue, then I'd recommend this one. The HA-1 is a good match with the HD 600, but the Blue with its stronger low bass and its refined highs lifts it to a higher class.

I would expect some of the improvements in the HA-2, but the Corda Blue and HA-2 are very different amps. I would agree though that buying better than the HA-1 is worthwhile with the HD600 if you can afford it. But then, I'd also make sure you had a good source.

Okay so the HA2 is a good place to start for the HD600. There wouldn't be something that requires me to spend a bit more for a significant improvement?

So the Porta Corda is good for portable minidisc/discman hookup? I'll have to email Jan about that for more information.

Like I said I do have a relatively good source. Although I can see myself using my headphone amp more if it didn't require me to disconnect my cdplayer from the back of my receiver. I'll have to explore the tape out option and see if it's easy and convenient. I do plan to use it for gaming a bit though. But I'm lazy so I see myself using it more if it's sitting right there

But ya I just want to do everything right the first time so I would be happy with it and be able to kill my upgrade bugs for at least a while.

Okay I think I'm gonna make a purchase soon. Any final suggestions?
