To make story short, my HD600 are in dire need of cleaning, this includes everything including washing foam padding from headband, replacing ear cushions, and cleaning grills and outer driver/elements housing.

I know how to take off ear cushions and I found how remove the grills, however I'm having trouble with the rest.

I need to know:
1. How to remove the drivers/elements from the upper U shaped fork that's keeping them attached to the headband. I tried just snapping it out of place with credit card but it won't budge and I'm afraid to apply more torque.
2. How to remove bottom U shaped piece of plastic from the elements, if that is possible at all.
3a. How to take out foam padding from the headband.
3b. What's the best way to clean it. Is it washable?

Thanks for any replies in advance.

u can use a brush to clean the earpad..just apply some detergent powder to remove any smell.

For cleaning the velour earpads I have found a soft brush and some Woolite work wonders for removing soils & oils from use.
1 - Submerge pads in cool water and squeeze to saturate (this prevents the foam inside form absorbing too much soap thus making for easier rinsing)
2 - using the recommended amount of Woolite mixed into cool water, wet the pads to soap
3 - using soft brush (I have a very soft facial brush I purchased from the beauty supply store made for cleansing makeup out of the pores) in a swirling motion gentle work the knap of the velour to fluff and lather
4 - rinse in cool water, squeezing the pads to eliminate remaining soapy residue
5 - gently squeeze in a clean towel to eliminate excess water
6 - hang to dry (overnight should do, or all day while at work)

I have done this several times on my k701's and after 2+ years they are still in quite nice condition. I expect eventually I will need to replace them, but at this time I expect to get another 2 or 3 washings before that becomes necessary.

I expect this same proceedure will work as well on the headband padding too.

Thanks for detailed answer on 3b, that should do it.

I still will have to replace ear cushions though, already ordered replacement. I've had my HD600 for probably at least 5 years now, so the current ear cushions are squished beyond repair, even the thin foam that actually covers the drivers have my ears imprints on them...

I do expect new cusions to last longer now that the headband is stretched and there is less pressure on them. I'll also make a point to wash them every two years. However, current ones will have to be replaced.

Anyway, I still need to know how to disassemble the headphones. If anyone got an answer to 1, 2 and 3a I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

OK, I completely disassembled my HD-600. The only thing I didn't do is I didn't remove the actual drivers from elements assembly (they are being held by 4 small clips).

After close inspection turns out the situation is more dire than I expected. There are cat hair stuck on the drivers (stupid cat). Here's the question, is it safe to use q-tip to remove them? Has anybody done it?

I'd avoid a Q-Tip, and instead use a very soft brush such as a makeup brush or camera lens brush . . . .

or air . . . . gently blow through a straw using slow, gentle, controlled bursts of air . . . gradually building as necessary. Do Not use canned air!
