Anyone mind tell me the pros/cons of each? Why one is better than the other?

The ATH-AD900 retail at Amazon.com for $266. They have a 4.5/5.0 star rating with 4 reviews.

The HD595 retail at Amazon for $182. They have a 5.0/5.0 star rating with 134 reviews.

So, are the AD900s worth the $84 premium?

I'm pretty sure comparing the AD900 and 595 is somewhat off track. I generally think of the AD900 as a tier above the 595's. As far as comparing the two, their sound is completely different, it would be more useful if you told us what type of music you listened to etc etc.

I owned both headphones. The pros for the HD595 for me was its comfort and forward mids. The cons for HD595 was its build quality. I had two pairs and both pairs broke less than a year after it was purchased (in the same location too).

The pros for AD900 is its instrument separation and accurate bass. The main cons are the comfort and slightly harsh highs. The AD900 does get a lot more comfortable with the phat pad mod.

So the AD900 has also got issues with the ears touching the driver (or rather the metal covering it)? I didn't know A/AD 700/900 had this problem.

I find that my AD900 do touch my ears depending on the placement of them. They're fine if I wear them a little forward so that the flappy bit of my ear is nearer the back of the cup and then the middle of the driver is pointing at my ear canal. It's only the edge of my ear that touches when the cans are further back (the middle of the driver is raised a bit).

They are otherwise super comfy, really light and barely any clamping. I can wear them for hours on end, but don't try any headbanging, they're going to slip if you move too violently. The pads can also feel like they're consuming your face at times as they are pretty huge

Most people say AD700's are 80% of the AD900's for much cheaper. I'd say go with them.

Comfort is very very good for most people. One of the most comfortable pairs of headphones I've worn. Plus I can't seem to find any high end headphone that can beat them for sound

Same here. They do have a different sound signature though than the AD700/AD900 from what I hear.

Back on topic, the AD900 should easily beat the HD595 in bass accuracy, treble, detail, clarity, separation, and soundstage, and overall balance. Comfort will vary from person to person but the HD595 will clamp a bit more. Mids are presented differently with each with the HD595 being more forward and the AD900 being a bit more laid back (although still forward sounding).

Marcus from headphonic says that very few who hear the HD595 and AD900 side by side favor the HD595.

so can we say AD700 is to HD555 what AD900 is to HD595.

everything else is just a matter of preference.

um not quite. AD700 and AD900 are very close sounding - AD900 is just refined tad bit more, but almost unnoticeable IMO. I personally prefer AD700 over both HD555 and 595. AD700/900 were more fluid and just more musical. I just find HD555 and 595's midrange just little off for some reason.
