Hey guys. As my departure date for Japan approaches, I have to decide which headphone to keep, my Grado 325's, or the Senn 580's.

More and more I find myself listening to the Senn's. If I A/B them, one right after the other, sure, the Senn's sound a bit veiled, but I find myself listening to them for longer periods of time and being amazed by how much more '3-d' they sound, a big wide deep soundstage.

My question. I'll probably be running off a discman while I'm there. I hear lots of people, when advising to use the 580/600 saying that you need an amp. Is there any discman out there that can drive this headphone decently?

I just hooked them up to my sister's cheap walkman, and there seemed to be adequate volume. I really hate the idea of always having to carry a little amp around and having the change the batteries too.

Toodles!

you get a nicer sound when amp'd but if the volume is adequate, and if it sounds okay there isn't any reason why u shouldn't use em. just the fact that they are open u may want to consider something. Especially on the plane.

Depends on whether you're pushing the volume near its limit--since the Senns are voltage driven the volume control can give you a pretty good indication of how hard the amp in the discman is working to pump out the sound.

tomek, It seems like you have answered your own question. If you listen to the 580's more and they have enough volume through your sisters pcdp, and you like the 3d sound better then keep the Senn's. I would still pick up a small portable amp no matter which phones you keep. The sound improvment outwieghs the hassle of carrying the amp. IMO.
