At ebay, I can get a refurbished HD580 for $140 and a B-stock HD600 for $230. I live in Vancouver, Canada, and I believe that I have to pay custom fee and taxes for them.

Which is the better deal? I am leaning towards the HD580 because it is significantly cheaper ( for me, anyway).
Doesn't the HD580 have almost the same drivers at the HD600? Will the HD580 be a SIGNIFICANT upgrade from the Koss KSC35/50/55/75?

I love the 600s but you should go for the 580s. That will leave some cash towards an amp.

I agree with DN. Both cans almost require an amp, so the 580s would leave you with money for an amp.

Unless you get the HD-595s! They don't need an amp.

I live in Vancouver as well. Now, as for fees, you are wrong. All you have to pay for is the headphones, GST+PST and a $5 border admin fee (if it is sent via USPS/Canada Post). Don't ever use UPS Ground. You can read all about this in other threads. Headphones are DUTY FREE in Canada, hence, there are no custom fees other than the $5.

Now, comparing the HD580 with the HD600, I somehow don't detect too much of a difference, but of course, back then, I was only using a PA2V2. I went the HD580 route and got it locally off another head-fier, almost brand new for CAD$120.

Good luck with your purchase.

Having heard both I can tell you that the HD580 is at least 90% of the HD600. I'm sure if you can get your hands on some HD600 grills it'll be even closer.

In any case at that huge difference in price (to me) its no contest. You will probably have to buy a decent amp to hear their full potential though out of the box they should beat the Koss headphones (depending on whether or not you like the Sennheiser laid back sound signature).

The HD580 is effectively the same as the HD600. They use the same drivers and the same general housing/headband. The HD600's drivers are supposedly closer matched than those of the HD580. Also, the grills of the HD600 are metal and (IIRC) in a different pattern than those of the HD580, which are plastic. Claims of carbon fiber being in the HD600 driver housings have been made but I don't think they've been substantiated. The claim of carbon fiber being in the headband of the HD600 has also been made, not sure if that's true, the headband is definitely different but that should effect the sound about as much what what wood your chair is made out of.

You can take the HD580 and add on the HD600 grilles and the HD650 cable and supposedly (can't say for sure and I've not had an HD600 to comapre to such a modded HD580). But it can't hurt to do this. And with the HD600 grilles, it does look better.
