I have had my HD580 for over 2 years. I like it alot but it ratles and now the cord died for the second time. Time to upgrade! What is a good replacment? Im thinking about the W100. Here is my question, will I notice the diference between the two? I got a Mg Head but im selling it because its very hard for me to tell the difrence from my reciver. So if cant tell the diference between the two amps, will I beable to tell the diff between headphones? If the W100 is a good choice, were do I get it? Im looking for any good $100-400 heaphone that is comfortable for hours, like th HD580. Thanks.

Do you want a different headphone, or do you want to repair the 580? A replacement cord costs something like $16. If you send it to Sennheiser for repair, just in case something besides the cord is bad, it will cost you a lot less than a new headphone. You will certainly be able to tell the difference between the 580, the Grado's and the Beyer's, as well as the AT's. Whether you will like it is another question. Cable replacements are cheap, and the fix for an intermittent contact has been posted here and at Headwize. Or is the cable just an excuse to upgrade anyway?

(I'd fix the 580 even if you do upgrade. It's a nice headphone to have around)

It's likely not the cable in your 580, It's more likely that the little connector contact spring in the earpeice is relaxing. Sennheiser can fix it. For a while they were even doing that fix out of waranty. Give them a call, talk to service, and ask what their current policy is. 860-434-9190. (East Coast time).

PS I like the 580 better than the AT's.

Fix the 580s, especially if Sen will help out. Where is the rattle?

If the cord is bad at the source end, it is still useful for a cable mod. If you don't want it, I will buy it from you. I have another cable that I want to build, and I need the connectors.

As far as upgrades go, there are lots of comfortable cans out there. Etys are the most comfortable to me, if I don't have to take them out to answer questions too often.

I have heard the HD 580s and the W100s, they're both great headphones, IMHO, but it's not easy to beat the 580's. But anyway, I've never heard any two models of headphones (other than the 580s and 600s) that sound even remotely like one another, and another thing I'm getting an appreciation for is that there is a lot of art and judgment and luck in designing a headphone that will stand up in comparison to the established better headphones. It doesn't seem to be easy at all.

Perhaps the reason you cannot tell apart the output of a receiver and an MG-Head is because you're not used to detecting subtle differences in equipment. Try listening very carefully to the changes in sound. You really might not be able to tell the differences if you're only working while listening or if you just spacing out.

Im sure thats very true, but such a little diference is not worth the 300$ to me. Plus with my setup its kinda a hassle to use.

I just want to know whats a good pair of phones to upgrade to? I want something comfortable and under $400. I love the deep bass of the hd580's and I would kill for the looks of the ATH-w100 and W1000. Sugestions? Audio cube the cheapest place for w100(0)?
