just received my hd280's today and so far i'm very happy. plenty of bass with a nice crisp top end. exactly what i was looking for (thanks tophill).

i can really feel weight of the synth bass on genesis 'abacab' and phil collin's drumming comes through crisp, clear and punchy.

the first thing i noticed is that my laptop sounds feckin horrible now! it's something i didn't notice before but is unbearable with the much better resolution of the hd280's. my budget jvc portable helps to clear up that problem. surprisingly my minidisc machine (sony nd707) is an excellent source even with discs recorded with the slightly lower bit-rate 'lp2' mode.

now i'm wondering what mods can be done to the hd280's to make them even better . . . . . . . . . . .

Cool!

Already looking into mods huh.

You might consider getting a better source if you are unhappy with it and one of the DIY amps like the cmoy or the meta42. I guess you could consider those a mod's

So does mine. Digital noise all over it. I can unreservedly recommend the Echo Indigo PCMCIA headphone amp - that'll sort it out.

thanks very much for the link. i'm a true 'tinkerer' who's never quite happy unless my new purchase is in pieces spread all over the workshop table, surrounded by screws that have lost their homes . . . . while i figger out how the hell i managed to get into this mess . . . . .

these phones have poisoned me. i crave musical clarity now. without that ultra sharp top end and effortless bass all music sounds slightly muddy. it's almost an addiction the way the increased listening experience has brought enlightenment to my ears. i'm goin to try and hold off the urge to upgrade for at least a year though . . . . . .

in a way i'm happy because of the pleasure these phones have brought to my music listening, but now i'm thinking of replacing my speakers both at work and at home, but i think i would have to spend a lot to get similar performance.

did anyone else go through a similar process after buying decent phones?

where can i get soft material type pads to replace the stock and slightly uncomfortable vinyl ones? (Sennheiser HD280Pro)
