What’s a good upgrade from Amperiors? Mine are going on almost 10 years, and ready to be refurbished a bit (a project for me later)

I used mine mostly for workouts/the gym, I didn’t mind the wire. Loved the very-tight fitting nature during exercise. Would like to retain these features in my new workout cans.

I’m looking for something with a little more bass slam and treble sparkle, while still fairly small cans and tight fitting with a wire.
Is it really 10 years since they were released? Hell, how the time just goes.

I didn't know the 600 ohm version is still available anywhere. I bought a pair of 600 ohm drivers and I'll swap them into a pair of HD 25-1s. So far I didn't hear them.

I would say from the collector/rarity standpoint, if you located a pair of 600 ohm buy them. Anyway, HD 25 is a very useful headphone, everybody should have a few. You could buy both, finances permitting :)

Hello guys,

I could choose between 25-1 and 25-13. Is the 600Ohm version audible distinguishable to the 70Ohm?

Assuming I have enough juice to drive them. Shoud one prefer the 600ohm sondwise or is it not worth the trouble?

The 600Ω version is really for broadcast applications where the 600Ω impedance is far less likely to be affected by the vastly varying output impedances of broadcast gear - headphone outputs in broadcast gear are often an afterthought where they are mostly used for simple voice monitoring.

That said, if you have an amp with enough voltage swing then they may be worth it, but they're not going to run well from the majority of portable devices, including portable amps.

That's true, high Ω loads aren't ideal for portable stuff :L3000:

So yesterday I grabbed a pair of the limited edition blue HD 25s. I've had a few HD 25s back in the day and was missing their super dynamic, punchy sound.

Had a few quick qs - anyone able to help?
1. I could swear this new pair sounds less grainy in the upper mids/treble and overall more warm (maybe even a bit muddy) than I recall the HD25s being - I assume the drivers haven't changed at all, correct? I could be mis-remembering the sound of my old pairs, or perhaps listening to higher end Focals in recent years has reduced my sensitivity to upper mids/treble...
2. If I purchased a pair of Amperiors and put their aluminium cups on the HD25s, could you expect them to sound like the discontinued HD25 Aluminiums, or would they sound more like Amperior?
3. If anyone has any recommendations for a decent copper cable replacement, let me know! The Oyaides seem quite hard to get hold of in the UK lately.

Thanks all :)

Also @jfunk I believe you reported that the cable is actually copper now rather than the traditional steel one. The steel cable had reprehensible levels of capacitance and resistance, I wouldn't be surprised if copper made an audible difference!

Ok thanks both - v helpful. Have checked and looks like mine still has the steel cable. The sound changes I'm hearing must be down to the new drivers then. I'm certain there's less bite to e.g. electric guitar than there used to be - undecided how I feel about that...the old HD 25 could be fatiguing at times but that was part of what made them sound exciting. Also feel like I'm perceiving a slightly wider soundstage than before which is cool.

That would be my guess too.

I know exactly what you mean. A bit grit here and there increases the sensation of excitement with some music, but I'd gladly trade in a bit of that to no experience any fatigue

Do you guys think the HD25 is worth 40€ more than the light (100€ vs 140€) ? I'm used to a double sided cable anyways and would swap the pads for some Yaxi alcantara pads. I don't need the rotating or splitting headband of the classic HD25.

Are the HD25 light a good fit for my needs or am I missing something that isn't as obvious as the headband and cable situation?

The new HD25 light is the same headphone as the regular HD25 except for the headband. That is only true however for the latest HD25 light version. Previous versions used a cheaper less performing driver. The latest version of the HD 25 Light and HD 25 now use the same identical drivers and cups. Only the headband differs. So you decide which headband suit you better considering the price difference. Hope it helps.

I have the new Light version. The cable in the Light is copper and sounds slightly better than the steel cable in the classic.

I was wondering about light versus regular HD25, so your post surely helped me, thanks!

Obviously the cable on the HD25 Light is a little different and is not splitted Left-Right the same way to adapt to a non-splitting headband. It is rather a symmetrical cable with “Y” shape that doesn’t insert in the headband but rather plugs into each cup directly. In the regular HD25 the cable is asymmetrical and inserts in the headband to reach the cups. But I assure you the sound is the same because the audio components are the same.
