Standard 800S always looked the best to me.

Where is Jana when Sennheiser needs her?

You know a company has hit peak profit and innovation rock bottom when they release a gold version of anything. "Armutszeugnis" as we say in Germany.

Gold is a color that should only be used, typically, to accentuate certain parts of a headphone, if it's used at all. Too much of it and the whole product will come off looking awfully gaudy.

With that said, this special edition of the HD 800 S actually looks pretty neat. It doesn't look half as tasteless as what I'd envisioned it to be.

After gold there is only one more color to use.

Sorry but I'd take a regular 800/800s over this any day. These manage to not only look gaudy but also cheap and flimsy.

I loved the way the original silver HD800 looked but felt the HD800S looked very bland, as if it were black plastic they forgot to paint silver. Maybe its because of the color of the silver inserts, as I think the HD820 looks good.

I'm not sure this gold HD800S is the ideal color (I like the gunmetal concept I posted in the other thread, that would be ideal IMO), but I do think the gold looks more exciting than the plain unpainted look of HD800S.

There is a company in the US called Colorware that will do almost any colour you want on your HD800/800S including some very wild greens and pinks. This one is my favourite though.......
Main difference is colorware both costs more and usually reduces resale value or at best has no impact on it. Likely also voids your warranty.

In this case since it's limited to 750 and an official 75th anniv release the colorway will increase the value of the item

Of course if you don't like the way it looks thats another story, but if you like the way it looks it's probably smarter from a resale value perspective to go the 75th route

You can basically do it with plasti Dip as well, except that you will not have the Lazer engraved letters.

Exactly! With 750 units worldwide, and if the 800s/S are discontinued, we may be in trouble. I don’t think this is a “rock bottom” status, but I will take that the 800 designs as a platforms had run it course of over a decade long. If it stop productions.....every one will be missing it a whole lot, and Sennheiser with Axel gone, may just turn into another chapter after this...

whatever the case, the 800s/S is what it is, one Of the best Dynamic out there. Trimming the heard, I only need 800s for my leisure

You also need the HD820 for your leisure :)

The hd800s is like the sun and the hd820 like the moon, similar but very different and both worth owning both for sound signatures and functional versatility differences.

customcans.co.uk also does any kind of color including pearls, fades, and custom artwork. And they specialize in Sennheiser parts and mods.

I am glad it works for you. I was disappointed with the 820 actually :frowning2: , but I am in for this anniversary

I need a closed back for about 75% of my listening, in this case hd820 about as good as it gets if one prioritizes soundstage. Very amp sensitive though like hd800s for ideal sound quality.

Sennheiser's 75th anniversary would have been the perfect opportunity for them to introduce their long-awaited, brand new flagship headphone. But instead, all we get is a HD 800 S (which is based on an 11-year-old design) that's painted gold?!

Seriously, what is this crap!?!
