TTVJ says 499 and call for price and HR says 449 and call. I've never seen them new below $300. if so they have already come down. For that price they are a steal.

You can find them used for $250 fairly easily. New prices are $300 and up. I saw a HD650 in our fs/ft forum with a $350 APS cable selling for $450. Deals are out there if you are lucky enough to find them.

Okay that sounds more like it, and you may see a few more come through now with the hd800s replacing them in peoples quivers. I have to admit though that i have mentioned that on other threads and most owners swear that they will keep their 650s as i will do. It isn't worth it to sell them, esp with recables.

Yeah; in fact after my amp I'm planning on doing a recable myself

As to if HD600 is discontinued, they are not. HD580 is the only phone in the HD580/600/650 that is presently discontinued, but I would imagine that HD600's time is coming soon.

I agree...I currently have both the HD600 and HD650 and I am having a real hard time trying to hear any differences.

If there is one difference, the HD650 has slightly more bass than the HD600...

I really hope the HD800s have a noticeable difference.

I saw the other classical music thread that rated the HD600 as the best classical headphone, above the AKG 701.

I see that the HD600 is a lot cheaper than the HD650, and not as many stores carry it as they do with the HD650.

By being an "older" model doesn't mean that it's bad right? Like older computers are slower and that kind of stuff.

Also, what amp is needed for a HD600? Is there some cheap amp that can do it? Like this one?

What kind of an amp is needed to fully drive these things? And I want an amp that can be plugged into wall outlets. I don't like using battery.

Older headphones never become obsolete or worse with age as long as they are treated well. Some members here use 30 year old electrostatic headphones as their best phones and they are still going strong.

HD600 is probably the best balanced of the mid-high Sennheiser phones. When I was shopping for new phones I ended up deciding on the HD600 instead of the HD650 on purpose.

As for amping, that's a big pandora's box you are opening. Most people will tell you not to get solid state for HD600 and I agree. Vacuum tube amps sound best in my experience. To keep your cost down I would suggest the Little Dot 1+. Pricing info is here. It's about twice the price as the micro, but the sound will be quite a bit better. It is an amp that is a mix of solid state and tube amp. The solid state keeps the cost down, while the tube part gives the amp a bit of the full-on tube amp sound. There are many glowing reviews of this amp in the amp forum. This one is one of the best bang for the buck you'll find. This isn't the ideal amp for HD600s by any means, but it is the best, cheapest you'll find for entry level.

Note that's the 1+ not the MK 1+

Different people have different ideas. After hearing my HD650s on a Zana Deux amplifier, i couldn't believe it, so i ordered one but they are a bit pricey - over my normal budget.
I am currently using a Musical Fidelity XCAN with the external power supply XPSU and it does pretty well it think but some may debate this. I have seen many points of view but one thing is sure, the better the amp the better the hd6xx s will sound.
If i wanted to spend a more reasonable amount of money i think i would try something in the Woo audio lineup. That is if i were to start over and try to stay in budget, but like i said i auditioned a bunch of tube amps at a local meet and nothing came close to the Zana Deux-it wasn't even on my list to consider and now it is almost built.

Is it true that headphones are picky about amps for no reason? Like you can get a pricey one and it just doesn't sound good for some reason?

Because since I'm ordering off the internet, I'm not going to be able to try it myself.

Per the above comment from Maxvia, it came in while i was typing, my xcan is a hybrid and like i said it does well by me and has for years. I agree that you want tubes or a tube/SS hybrid.

I have 2 HD650s and 1 HD650. The new HD650s you pick up today are very similar to the concurrent HD600. And I mean very similar. Light-airy highs and detailed separation are their call cards. But they are somewhat anemic. The older HD650 I have sounds very warm with fuller bass emphasis. I prefer the latter signature. I also have an older generation HD580; these are also warmer than the newer pairs and share a similar sound to the old HD650. I'm one of the few people who likes the original Senn sound because they're somewhat Grado-like without the uphill highs.
