Im probably planning on sticking with my 595sfor a while, seeing that the 650s really arent exactly a huge leap in sound quality, would it be worth it to recable my 595s, i have a 3g lossless with a supermacro... Would i have to send out the phones to get them recabled or could i do it myself?
I think many here would argue that the 650's are a rather large leap in sound quality. But to each his own and if you are satisfied with what you have, you are a lucky man!
Headroom I think requires you to send the headphones in. I suppose you could do it yourself but since the cable is single-ended into the headphones, it might get a little tricky. I'm sure Headphile would also recable it for you.
If you're set on keeping the 595's, I'd definitely consider the cable upgrade.
Would it be worth the 150 or 200$ to recable it if sometime within the next few years or so i may buy 650s? I wouldnt know how they sound, but i want to definately hear them before i buy them. The problem is i cant go a day without my headphones so i dont want to ship them out
Just out of curiosity, is this your own assement through audition or have you read somewhere that "the 650s really arent exactly a huge leap in sound quality?" I consider HD650 as huge improvement over HD595, but that's just me... your mileage may be different.
However you will need to use more powerful amp to take full advantage of HD650.
Frankly, I'm not sure if replacing cable on HD595 would be cost effective upgrade. I would think source upgrade would be more cost effective (=noticeable) than cable upgrade.
Generally speaking i use my ipod when i travel with supermacro and the HD 595s, at home i use airport express, would it be a good idea to get something like a seperate dac or just a sound card for my comp? emu 1212m is what i was looking at, but i dont know exactly where id be getting my best "audiophile" music from, either a dac and cd player, or 1212m
Good point, i should probably pick up some albums, i wanna convert all my dads old floyd and the who albums... Do they still make albums in excess for all artists still?! am i showing my age in how young i am lol. 20

Definitely not. Biggest advantage of 595 lie in their price - which will be gone once you put the added price of aftermarket cables.
No matter how much I like 595, HD650 simply bring audible refinements and more full bodied sound over 595, at a price. Are those worth the extra expense ? In my opinion, not at twice the price. But does recable present good value ? In my opinion, better get the 650.
I agree with go_vtec that you need to audition or compare the phones yourself instead of taking opinion like mine above. However I do use both phones with good enough, though may not be top-end, source and amp, fwiw. If you can afford 650 without blinking, then hey, why stop at 595.
While I agree that changing the source can have a big impact, given that you listen mostly off your PC or Ipod (two different sources), I think you should stick with an upgrade that works for both (vs upgrading one source which only works for that source). Cables, amp or the phone itself is the way to go. IMO, in order of impact, it is the phone, then amp, then cables. I could be wrong about this as I have not heard the 595 with after market cable nor the Supermacro (though I wish I could).
I do have the 650 with Zu Mobius cable and I just A/Bed the Zu with the original and there is not really that much of a difference. I suppose it is a matter of taste really. The Zu adds more details and treble and bass seems faster. It be no means transforms the sound but its a nice add on. BTW, the 580/600/650 have plugs so switching out the cable is simple unlike with the 595s which need to be taken apart.
Just based on reading this forum, the SR-71 might be an upgrade to the SM but will not run off AC if you have that in your SM. As mentioned, the cable is a slight difference IMO, some here say it is a huge difference.
I do think there is a decided difference between the 650 and 595 when properly amped. The 650 is fuller, wider and richer. 595 to me is a bit grainy at the top end in comparison. I like the 595 but bought the 650. Once I did an A/B comparison, I just knew that I would always miss the extra that the 650s brought.
If it were me and I had $200 for a cable upgrade, I would sell the 595 and get the 650. Otherwise, I would be looking at an amp upgrade before a cable.
