HD 580 vs DT880 vs AKG k501

I think you should get an amp first. You'll hear plenty of improvement with your 280s. All the headphones you have mentioned have great reputions; each has it's own strengths and most would say that it comes down to preference. It also depends on what amp/source you're using, ergo, get an amp.

well like i sorta need to sell my 280 b/c of the fact that they are very isolated...

i was thinking of after i get the headphones saving up for a 60$ amp that i could use at my comp and maybe ipod at home...

i found a deal on some DT880 for 230$ and with 60$ thats 290 that i dont have...if i get the K501 or 580 or 595 i would probably be able to get an amp like that right now with them, but the thing is i dont want to eventually want to upgrade to the DT880 which i could get and then save for a while until i get 60$, im still positive that the DT880 unamped are better than the 280 unamped and amped anyways. Im pretty much between the 595 refurbished for 150$ or brand new DT880 for 230$....still not sure yet

If going to use them mainly for gaming 880s are kind of overkill no?
But if you are set on the 880s just get them and save $200-300 for a good amp.

**oh wait you want only open phones**

Well, semi closed/open I guess would do... but I agree, 880's for gaming might be a little over-kill... You should maybe reconsider the 555's they're a really nice 'phone....

no no no like i said before!!!! I WILL be gaming in these alot. BUT i also want nice headphones that i can listen to off of my computer(audigy) and off of my ipod

If i cant get this deal on the DT880 new, then i will either pick up a pair of HD595 for 150$ refurbished (even thoug i cant find the link), or maybe a pair of HD580 for 120$ or maybe even a pair of HD600 for around 190$.

I am leaning towards the 595 but what do you guys think?I wouldnt mind spending that extra 50$ towards the HD600 if they are much better than the HD595 for the sources i will be using, and part of me wants to get the best so i dont have to keep wondering or thinking of upgrading for a while. These headphones will need to last me for a while.

Some would say that the 600's aren't worth the extra money, (Including me). If money is tight don't go for the 600's, stick with the 580's if you go that route.

If you're planning to use your soundcard and/or iPod, I don't think DT880 or AKG K501 are your choice.

Moreover, I'd rate AKGs as the worst for gaming (although, as you can see in my sig, these are my favourites

) - you just won't get the "meat" of all sound effects: 501s are too delicate for gaming use, especially unamped.

On the other hand, the strong point of K501s is their comfort - an aspect that must not be overlooked, especially for extended use!

I think you may be underestimating the importance of an amp with the high ohm cans. I have sr-60's and hd600's and amp'ed the hd600's kick butt. Straight out of my karma they are turds, not even close to my grado's. If you have to go any length of time without an amp and plan on using the iPod then your going to be very dissapointed. Without an amp my hd600's are very low volume wise and are anemic with no bass out of my karma which is said to be one of the better daps for driving cans. My Extigy does a bit better, but they are still not happy. The grado's are great although they are what they are and dont really compete with the senns.

If I had no amp, I would take my sr-60's over the hd600's. Hell, I will always keep them just in case I want to go un amped.

Hmmm I will probably end up getting an amp, most likely a 60$ one first that i could use out of my comp and out of my ipod at home as well...

I heard that the HD595 with a Audigy works great so thats why i was leaning towards them, and the HD580 are great value at 120$ used and sound pretty good unamped from what i hear as well.

But I really really want a pair of the DT880! They fit what i would want in a can perfectly i believe. What amp do you reccomend for around >60$ for a starter amp that i could use for my comp, ipod, and cd player in my room.

Yeah i think thats what im gonna do, especially since im getting these headphones for 60$ with a Group Buy. I was gonna use that 60$ that i will be saving and get a Go-Vibe 2 or CMOY amp for them that i can use with my ipod and my audigy. My house will also be getting a huge upgrade in sound equipment as well this fall so i will be watching movies out of them from there as well sometimes and maybe some music even though it wont be in my room.
