I have just assemblied my first attempt at a CMoy amp. The only problem is that it sounds horrible when in an altoids tin. I don't know what to do to fix it. The right channel sounds perfect. However the left channel is just a loud static sound that seems to follow the bass line. When outside the case the amp sounded supurb, but now I don't know what is wrong. I have redone all of the solders to the jacks and the pentometer, however this has not helped the situation. Please help!

I will assume that you insulated the tin with electrical tape. Check the jacks in the tin, sometimes you will have a ground problem and will need to insulate the jack(s). See if you can wiggle the jack and at least make the sound come back intermittently.

unfortunatly that didn't seem to help. I decided to remove the amp from the case. I desoldered both of the jacks and used alligator clips to hook up the input and output. Then I tested to find the same problem. Next I removed the pot from the signal path to encounter the same problem. Now I am down to what I had working perfectly just yesterday. Could it be the chip has blown?

Why on earth would anybody want to fit a circuit board into a mint tin?

I find there are major sonic advantages to be gained if you fit your PCB into a Big Mac container..... the polystyrene casing adds warmth to the sound. (remember to remove the excess lettuce before attempting to fit anything electrical.. remember 9V can kill ants)

The way I avoid problems is this: Before I solder a joint, I make sure of a good mechanical connection. When I can, I squeeze a joint with my miniature needle point pliers. Then I solder!

In your case, I suggest that you heat up all your solder joints. If that works, you are done. If it does not clear up your problems, then I suggest that you resolder all your suspect joints!

Did you ground your jacks? That's important too!
