Hi everyone,
I currently have a AT-W5000 and its a really good can but getting the itch to try some other cans now. The W5000 is fairly balanced in terms of detail, warmth, and bass to me so want to try something thats different. I was thinking of either the AKG K701, Grado RS1, or HD650. Has anyone tried the W5000 and have owned another one of those cans? Want to know the sort of differences between them. And would like any other suggestions for cans too
Thanks

The W5k is superior to HD650, DT880 and K701 IMO - if it fits. Senseless to try those.

Maybe a Stax SR303 or 404? Only a sidestep though...

Too many intangibles for anyone to give you a decent answer. If it were me, I'd make a list of W5000 dislikes. Then start a search. There is a lot of info on this forum and it's best to use it. Personally, I've owned the W5000 twice, Balanced and SE, with two different amps. I wanted something different. That's all.

You are the former user "Andrea" (the Sennheiser goddess), aren't you?! Welcome back!

The RS-1 will definitely sound technically inferior(in regards to detail, imaging, soundstage, transparency, etc.), but you will gain impact in the lower region. It will be less transparent, but very fun due to it's liquid midrange. One of the most "exciting" headphones, but also no where near as analytical as the w5000. That could be a good or bad thing, just depends on you.

The k701 is actually kind of similar to the w5000. Transparent, fast, large soundstage, detail, etc. From my experience, the w5000 improves on each area slightly. Going with the k701 you will gain an airy feeling due to their open nature. If you are looking for something a lot different, that may not be it. I definitely would not keep both, but would easily recommend one or the other as a keeper.

The hd650(although I have only heard briefly) also has a very different signature. Darker with a larger quantity of bass. I'll be receiving a pair in about a couple of hours so I'll report back.

If you want something with detail extraction, airiness, soundstaging (i.e. close to what the W5000 provides) but without excessive colouration and more bass weight, the ATH-AD2000 is your friend.

If you like W5000 SQ...perhaps you might want to entertain Sony SA5000, Beyer 880, or K701.

Certainly a question of listening habits and genres, but I experienced the AD2K to be the "worst" of all ATs in respect of (upper mids) coloration. Yeeek, Yeeek, Yeeeeeek. Also soundstage wasn't very impressive (whereas the bass was).

Oh yah I like the W5k sound, not trying to find something to replace it with really, more like a compliment if I want to listen to something with a slightly different type of sound, or just to try something else

. Maybe something more detailed and transparent with wider soundstage or one with a balance of detail/soundstage/bass. Maybe i'll just go with different and get a HD650. My budget would have to be between 500-800 though, should i save up for a UE9? Seems some W5k users went UE9 and really enjoy it. Honestly this could just be me trying to increase my can collection
