Hi
I have the AMAZING PICO amp
But, I want one more portable amp (also with DAC - a MUST), and a USB input

So, what is in the same league ? (or even better)
(budget can be even up to 1000$ or what ever)

Thank you

I also don't understand why you want a more portable amp. Pico is one of the best and one of the smallest amp/dac combos out there.

I understand your will to get new "toys", but you already have one of the funniest ones. It will be very hard to get another that gives you better SQ along with more portability.

Not to start a flame war or anything.

But I've had a portable amp and a so-so desktop DAC ... (XM4 w/ 0404) ... they sounded quite nice. And yet, I really had no idea how sub-par said configuration could be when sat next to my soon to follow desktop variants explorations...

I mean to say ...

That once I invested in a full time desktop DAC (MHDT Paradisea+) and a full time desktop amp (Stello HP100) ...

Only then did I realize what I was missing with my more "miniaturized" equipment (speaking mostly of the XM4 portable ... the 0404 was quite decent but no match for the MHDT Labs stuff).

Here's a shot of my current setup ... note the MHDT Labs "Havana" on loan for the Houston Head-fi meet; it's a DAC that ever so slightly, but definitely improves on their already fantastic Paradisea+ DAC:

...

Also ...

Here's a shot of my Stello HP100 ... an amp that (upon first listen) completely destroyed my old Practical Devices XM4 in regards to resolution, soundstage and tranparency:

...

The point of all this?

Though many portables will sound excellent ... (especially those of the Emmeline variety) ...

The upgrade provided by a full desktop DAC and desktop AMP combo is simply beyond measure.

Really ...

I was staggered by the difference in sound quality.

Anyway ...

Just some gratuitous thoughts (and pr0n shots!).

(BTW ... for the price minded: MHDT Labs Havana DAC = $900.00 US / Stello HP100 amp = $600.00 US)

Worth every penny.

Best and good luck bro.

I also wonder why you'd want a second one. Assuming you're committed to this plan though I would recommend you explore the Predator. It's a combo dac/amp and seems to have a pretty strong following. It came out right about the time of the Pico. I've not heard it though but you can try it risk free with Ray's 30 day return policy.

*Exactly* my intention regarding my comments about "Emmeline".

That said ...

It's still no match for a decent and dedicated desktop DAC/AMP combo.

(which is sort of what I gathered the OP was looking for with his 1000.00+ qualification)

EDIT: sorry, just re read ... missed the bit about portable only!

what do you say ?

Sorry for the misunderstanding.

My fault.

Buy a Predator from Ray Samuels/Emmeline and do some comparison tests.

Best.
