Have the pads on my HD600s been smushed?

I've noticed that my HD600s have pads which are made of a softer material than the pads on my new HD650s. The pads on my HD600s also seem somewhat smushed compared to the pads on the HD650s--they're wider looking and shorter which means that they don't keep my ears as far away from the drivers as the pads on the HD650s do. Is this normal? I haven't seen anyone mention this in the HD600 vs HD650 threads. Also, since I bought my HD600s used I'm wondering if the pads may have been smushed by the original user (and myself). I've tried looking at picture of the HD600/580 online but I haven't found anything conclusive. Can anyone provide some insight?

I don't know since I don't have a Senn 650, but I can say from personal experience that the pads on my HD580 have smooshed down a bit over time. I've had them for almost 2 years now and the pads are now about 75-80% as tall as they were when they were brand new. It's just part of the wear & tear process.

the pads on my HD600s also get smooshed. I used to take them off and try to mess with them, but nothing really happened. It doesn't bother me anymore.

Does anyone know if you can buy replacement ear pads from Sennheiser? The 580's I just got suffer from this too, and a few months down the road I think some replacements will be needed.

Absolutely... they're on the pricey side tho (for pads). Check out www.sennheiserusa.com (or sennheiser.com outside the USA)... click on "Shop" at the top menu, then "Parts," then "Cushions." Part # H-50635.

Oh well, to me it's worth it!

Cool, it looks like I'm not alone here. But have any other HD650 owners noticed a difference between the pads? I'd like to know just how much smushing is normal cause the pads on my HD600 aren't even as close to as tall as those on my new HD650s. Where the pads on my HD600s once as tall as the pads on my HD650s or did they already have a more smushed shape to begin with?

If I remember correctly, HD590/580/600/650 all have the same pad when they're brand new.. I've seen several HD580 and 600 where their pads has been so worn out, they're almost completely flat.

New pads should be a couple of inches in height and relatively rigid.

Hmm.....to me the foam on my HD600 pads feel a lot different (they feel soft, same as the foam used in the DT880 pads) than the foam on the HD650 pads(they feel harder, more rigid, like the foam on the K501 pads). To me they feel like two entirelydifferent kinds of foam, but I dunno, I don't know much about materials.

I think what you're feeling is correct, that's exactly what happens to these Sennheiser pads over time.

The material inside just sorta softens and collapses... maybe collecting sweat & moisture over time has something to do with it too.
