I received AKG K242 HD headphones today and when I dissasembled them I was in shock because I expected different driver.
 
Looks like there is absolutely the same driver as in K530 Ltd. I don't know how they will sound because they need need burn-in. I wanted to give K530 to my mom so I don't care much. These K242 are more comfortable, though.
 
What's more. I read in service manual that these headphones:
 
k141mkII, k142 hd, k171 mkII, k172 hd, k240mkII, k242 hd, k271 mkII, k272 hd
 
use the same driver 2606B00050. There is no info on K530 but the driver looks the same and ~26mm. Old K240 drivers look different.
 
In the end, the most important thing is how it sounds. But looks like rip-off to me.

That's interesting.  I have the K240 Mk II (which is the same as the Studio) and I *really* like them.  Always wondered about the K242HD's, but maybe I don't need to any longer.

K240 mkII have different diaphragms than previous Studio according service manual. After almost 30 hours of burn-in, K242 sound still like joke to me. I don't get it. I hope that extensive burn-in will help. Othervise I wasted my money.

I'm pretty sure they are using the same driver, 55ohm 102db, like all their 'XXL Varimotion Capsule' drivers. I tend to believe that the hps sound differently due to different housing structures. I have a pair of k240 mkII and I have listen to a pair of k271 mkII before for quite a long time and they are very very different. Maybe the K530 is cheaper because the housing design is not as good as the k242? How do they sounds to your own ears? Same? Different? I'd really like to read a review from you about this.

The Mk II and Studio are the same headphone.  I'm positive about this.
 
The Mk II just comes with an additional cable, and velour pads in addition to the std "pleather" pads that both come with.

The Studio and MkIIs are a little bit different, old studios use a different driver, DKK32?, the new driver that op is talking about is the capsule xxl, which the mkii phones share. But as suggested in K240 studios' service document that k240s can be fitted the latest xxl drivers and 'any other usable variants'.

Yes, it is a matter of the whole construction. But when I pay more money, I expect better quality. Not the same in different package.
 
I saw that old K240 Studio driver picture and it looked different. But there was gazillion versions, so I'm not sure. But according service manual K240 studio uses 2606B002 or 2606B003 or "equally useable variation" 2606B005. But I suspect, that it's a matter of repairs only because they recommend replacing both capsule somewhere. But that's obviously.
 
Or maybe they put there drivers according their mood.
 
My K242 have now around 40 hours of burn-in and still sound like junk. Frankly, construction of K530 looks better to me. And sounds too. Not to mention comfort. I'm dissapointed and frustraited. I'll see later.
 
BTW I paid 125€ for K530 Ltd and 149€ for K242 HD.

you should have gone for the k240 mkii, i got them for around 90pounds. the k242 hd is a little too expensive for the new paint job imo

But the current versions of both use the same part no.:  2606B0005 (which is the same as 2606B00050).

 The Studios never used the DKK 32.  Only the XXL.

I found out why K242 sound like garbage to me. The problem is small space for ears in velour pads. They have also plastic inside and headphones sound like plastic can.
 
So I experimented with K530 pads and surprisingly, the sound is more open without any trace of that garbage sound. But still K530 sounds better to me. Looks like I really wasted my money. I'll gave them to my mother and I hope she will like them. Otherwise they are really garbage.

What about difference in sound between letherette and velour pads on K240 mkII? Do they have the same plastic garbage sound with velours like K242 have? I'm not able to listen to that dull sound.

I put K242 pads on K530. The same garbage sound that K242 have. I don't know, either I'm deaf or they made something really bad in china. I'm sick from that sound.
