I have a computer music based system with a dual bootup either Windows XP or Windows Vista, I primarily use a RME 96/32 soundcard for playback feeding a balanced digital signal into a Benchmark dac(not usb version), I also have a EMU 0404usb and MAudio Transit in reserve for conversion, both excellent and very good value for money particularly the little Transit which was my first buy and have recommended to many friends. I use Foobar 8.3 in XP and the latest 9 version in Vista (I don't seem to be able to get the ASIO in Foobar to work with this), I also use JRiver which is a liitle bit more fiddly to use than Foobar regarding music selection but has a stable ASIO for what ever soundcard I use.
Before the Vista upgrade I preferred music played back through Windows XP using either Foobar or JRiver as it had a smoother and more detailed sound, without any upsampling in either as I tend to find paricularly in Foobar that upsampling makes the music sound a little less involving. However since the recent Vista upgrade I have noticed a distinct improvement using Vista, the sound is now better defined with excellent bass and space, paricularly depth of soundstage, and now prefer this to XP for playback. Has anyone else found this to be the case?
