hate to be a killjoy, but am i the only one that thinks new years is an overrated hyped up waste of time? i mean money is wasted on fireworks, people just get drunk.

for me the only good thing is its a public holiday, which means i get extra pay.

right now its 11.19pm in Aus, I am home alone, on my laptop, yay the sun has gone around the sun once more, big whoop, why don't we get drunk!

someone enlighten me, i am not getting it!

It's a celebration of the new year and a reflection on the past year. And it's fun

I think people celebrate it for the same reason they celebrate anything. Birthdays, Christmas (it has roots not in christianity but in festivals celebrating ancient cultures and the solstice), anniversaries (these tend to be annual also hehe), Australia Day. Just to celebrate something. People have a good time and that's not bad.
I think home alone on your laptop is a perfect way of "celebrating" it, whatever works.
It's no more overhyped than any other sort of celebration. We humans create meaning from the most meaningless of situations just so we can have a bit of a party. I'm not sure anyone really cares what year it is, they probably just want to have fun and we all have a different sense of what is fun. Many of those people celebrating New Years aren't interested in headphones for example

Yes you could choose to make December 31st "headphone journey reflection day" but you stop reflecting on 2007 naysayer!

Have a good one mate.

Traditionally in Scotland we would celebrate this instead of Christmas. There are many who still celebrate Hogmany more, including myself. If we are talking overhyped you just need to look at Christmas.
