how do you guys do it, on a headphone with a long cord that is just too much to handle?

Wrap it up close to the connector, throw a cable tie on it....call it a day

I stuff the extra length into a drawer and close it till it almost pinches just the rubber part of the cord. That keeps it managed and easy to access.
