As my dad gets older, he is less & less stable on his feet. But he still enjoys walking around his yard, and a bit up & down the street.

I'd like to get him a really cool walking stick. Not a stodgy looking cane or anything. But something more rustic & masculine, like a nice carved & eurothaned walking stick with a leather strap near the top & a rubber stop at the bottom. Something between 54-64" tall & 1.5-2" in diameter, I'd guess.

I've looked on eBay, and found a couple. But it's difficult to know what I'm really buying.

Anyone have any ideas on the subject (size recommendations, type of wood, etc.), or better yet - a good source?

Thanks in advance.

Fashionable Canes sells beautiful walking sticks (I have five) but their customer service leaves a lot to be desired.

Go for a walk in the woods, find a workable piece, and carve one for him yourself. Did that for my pops a few years ago so he could get around better at the cottage and he's been using it ever since.

Did that with a nice old stick I found one day hiking. That was nearly 10 years ago. It still works. I swear that thing can take more abuse on a trail than I can...

Just remember to find a nice wood to use. Something hard but just a bit flexible. Man you can have fun making one of those out of a simple branch...
