I've decided to purchase this soldering iron, as the previous (inexpensive) irons I've had really sucked.

My question is that on ebay, they show some that says "936" and others that say "936-12". Is there any difference between the two?

Thanks.

Edit: Is the tip the unit ships with small enough for working on smaller resisters and things? Or do I have to also get a smaller tip? And, if so, what small tip would you recommend?

Thanks again.

936-11, ESD station, includes 900S (small) iron and iron holder
936-12, ESD station, includes 907 (medium-standard) iron and iron holder
936-13, ESD station, includes 908 (large) iron and iron holder
Simple as that!

I second the .8mm tip for smd. I use a 1.6mm for everything else.

Order your tips directly from Hakko....they don't charge for shipping

I would use this for precision smd like the Gamma2:

HakkoUSA - Product Detail - Replacement Hakko 900M Tip

I used the chisel tip .8 with a 45x scope and still couldn't avoid a few solder bridges on the fine pitch ic's.

The stock tip that comes with the 936 is the chisel tip 1.6.

*shrug* I've successfully built 2 full y1's, and a y1 USB-SPDIF with a 1.6mm chisel tip.

Sometimes controlling the quantity of solder on a very fine (<<1mm) can be more trouble than it's worth imo.
Something a little larger can be easier to work with, even for smd stuff.
