I listen to a lot of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Guns N Roses and Prodigy - mainly RHCP - had the DT 990 Pro which I loved, got the Denon D1100 which I really like....but I want a quality open headphone now to compliment my closed backed smaller Denon cans.
 
Just can't decide between Beyer DT 880 250ohm or DT 990 in the 600ohms (can get a great deal on either right now) but I just can't decide. Is the 600ohm version 990 really that much different/better than the 990 Pro and also someone sell an avid RHCP listener on the DT 880's if possible!

I don't think the difference in 990 pro vs 990 600 ohm is as great as the one for the 880.
 
I own 880 250 and 990 250 and they are both quality headphones, you're not going to get anything better with 880, just different, it's a sidegrade not an upgrade.
 
In fact after examining the internals of both headphones I am 90% certain that they use the same driver and the differences in sound are due to the 880's use of felt over the driver and inside of the enclosure.
 
The 880 sounds more subdued and flatter than the 990, different but not better or worse.

Yeah I'm thinking I might go for the DT 880 because at the end of the day it's a bit different from the 990 variant, plus if I don't like it I can always return it and fallback on the tried and trusted 990. 
 
It's just with my musical tastes I'm not sure if neutral is going to be my thing. Especially for movies. But it might be just what I need I simply don't know.

I could only give you my subjective opinion.  I own the DT-990 600 ohm and so that is my personal favorite and love the sound signature.  I have listened to all the headphones you mention.
To me, the 600 ohm DT-990 Premium is the way to go.  The remarkable thing is...the 600 ohm model does not take a lot of power to drive.  I expected
that it would, but takes very little gain aka voltage to power it.  Can even achieve decent volume with an Ipod...but we know that volume isn't the whole story.
The heapdhone comes alive with an amp.

I like RHCP on my dt 880 Pro 250's, but if I where to get an 880 I'd go with a Dt 880 600 ohm! I'm currently looking for a dt 990 Pro my self [for emd mainly] still though the 600ohm dt 880 is notably warmer and has a little more BASS than the 250 and 32 ohm varieties

See that's the thing my musical tastes tends to involve bass but more than that (obviously if you listen to rhcp) it's musicality and rhythm. I'm also something of a detail freak too. And I like a wide soundstage I'm not so keen on boxed in sounding headphones. It's important to note that I'd be using these headphones for blu ray too - I can't imagine anything topping the DT 990 Pro for movies that was just awesome! 
 
So anyway yeah I want bass but I don't want a thick boomy mess that drowns out details in an obvious way. I'd like the bass to be well represented but tuneful with it but can slam when called for. Is this the 880 or is it just not?

I feel with the 600 ohm dt 880 it should b! my 880s slam rather nicely when it's called for... although I eq them and use a hardware bass boost as well... still the 990s have MORE bass cleary than the 880s, the 600ohm 990 might b better... I've yet to try the 990... [still trying to purchase them e.e]
