Is there anyone else out there who owns/carries firearms? If so, please post pics.

I have a rifle and a shotgun, but I'm thinking of picking up up a Springfield Armory ported XD-40. Anyone have any experience with this pistol? Any other recommendations for a first handgun?

I have a couple of rifles. This one is my favorite -- for sniping woodchucks at long distance.

Remington Model 700 Classic, .223 (Year 2000 Limited Edition)

This sits on top of it (Leupold VX-II 3-9x50mm):

No handguns yet, so I can't offer any suggestions....

Well, for now it's just going to be something to practice with, but I hope to carry it with me in my car eventually, so reliability and accuracy are important. I have no preference in caliber, but right now I'm leaning towards 0.40 since it seems to provide a good balance between power and cost. My budget depends on how much I spend on audio and whether my current employment (computer engineering research) continues once school starts up again. I'm guessing ~$800 at the highest, but a lower price is definitely better.

I'm not a big fan of concealed carry but I am an avid gun owner and I enjoy guns. I you are thinkin' strictly personal defense then I would suggest a 12g shotgun but since you're asking about pistols:

I have never fired the XD-40 but it looks and feels like a great weapon and handles extremely well. I use a Sigarms P229,a Glock 19 and Heckler & Koch P200SK as compact weapons which is what I think you should start with. The H&K is the finest pistol I have ever fired and it is flawless right out of the box. The Sig is also excellent right from the box but I have not been so lucky with the various Glocks I have owned. They all seem to need trigger and action work to be really comfortable to me. If I had to have one compact firearm it would be the H&K P2000SK.

I happen to prefer the 45acp round but find compact weapons in this caliber very lacking in terms of accuracy and control. I have "settled" in a way to using 9mm rounds but have come to enjoy the weapons that fire this round. My wife carries the Sig P226 as do most of the Chicago cops and FBI agents I know. That speaks well for the Sig weapons but you need to find a dealer that will allow you to test fire a weapon to see what you like best.

Right now the pistol is just for fun, I just want to have the option of using it for CC if I decided to do so later on. The first pistols I looked at were Sigs, and I'd really like the P226 (I'm also interested in a fullsize), but it just seems a little too pricey.

LOL, hopefully everyone will remain civil, lest this thread goes outside.

Tuberoller: Is it the weird trigger safety thing (that tiny secondary trigger thing) that makes Glock pistols more awkward to handle?

I remember the XD can be bought for around $300 when they were called the HS2000, now that springfield distributes them they raised the price.
My oldest is my Sig P239 in 9mm, over 4,000 rnds through that puppy. At around 3,000 rnds my hammer reset spring broke and I called sigarms for a new one. Installed it myself, not as easy as detail stripping a Glock but not bad.
You need to rent the one's you're interested in or try them from a friend. I find the .40 cal a little bit snappy but 9mm in +P would be too coming out of a 3 in barrel.

and a pump-action at that. Nothing says "don't F### with me" more than that loud KA-KRACK sound of a pump-action 12-gauge chambering a shell. It announces loudly and clearly that you're packing, and you don't have to hit dead center either.

Kahr's one of the approved NYPD off duty weapons. Never heard anything bad about them, though they did have some problems when they first came out.
The DA trigger is really smooth (no stacking like a Glock) but I find it really hard to rack the slide. (gotta build up my upper body strength)
The history channel did a Tales of the Gun on Shotguns a few days ago. You should visit the Beretta showroom if you have one in your city. If you have to ask, you can't afford it.
If you're into competition check out the Glock GSSF meets in many cities, it's one of the more simple ones unlike IDPA. (but you need a Glock)

I wouldn’t get a ported handgun for use as a defensive weapon. The upward flash can temporarily blind you if used at night when you need all of your senses to be as sharp as possible.

The Sig P239 is and excellent choice. I carry one in .40 since it’s reasonable small and thumps.
I have the P229 in .40 and a drop in .357 Sig barrel so I can change calibers for something a little different.

This isn’t concealable but it’s just a blast to shoot. No recoil and 30 rounds of range clearing fun.

Buying something good like a SIG or H+K is an investment. It’ll fire every time and will lose only a small portion of its value.
