The difference is that GS1000 are discontinued.

The GS1000i has a beefier cable, the best grado for the money is an SR-80/RS-2/HF-2 and Grados do have a soundstage, just a much smaller and more forward one.

the gs-1000i is supposed to have an improved driver and cable. I owned them for about 6 months and really loved them, but I've never heard a gs-1000 (non i)

GS1000i has better resolution on highs - this is what I perceived in direct comparison. Going back to the GS1000 reveals slight coloration of the old cable. The new one sounds more transparent.

Usually it's improved, but mainly said for marketing.
GS1000i has a thicker cable, and a slightly improved driver.
