I am trying to buy amazon gift cards with my amex but the grocery stores refuse my credit card (even if I can give my ID to verify). They insist on cash or debit for gift card purchase. Did this happen to you?

Happened to me , so I just use my debit card for those
also money order requires paying upfront never asked but sure has something to do with store getting paid

I believe Amex only pays out 94% to the retailer.

It's quite standard here that any gift cards are cash or debit only.

They have been ripped off.

Credit Cards charge back, in that you can refute the transaction.

Someone steals a card, buys a bunch of gift cards (cash effectively). Then the owner calls in the CC theft, the CC company unwinds the purchases, and the gift card seller loses money.

Gift Cards are cash.
Credit Cards can be disputed.

Use debit or cash to buy gift cards.
