Hello All,

This site had a pivotal influence on my recent purchase of the DT 990, and Fiio Olympus 2 DAC.  Thank you all so much!!!  I've been a depressed audiofile for as long as I can remember, never knowing enough to satisfy the itch, or maybe just not wanting to take the plunge.  After doing weeks of research I recently did take that plunge, and was totally WoWed.  My son listened to my 990's once, and said it completely ruined the impression he had about his own headphones.  Now I'm in the market for something a bit more sound isolating for those days when a relatively quiet spot is in high demand, or when I get the naughty boy looks in the library from my leaky DT 990's. I've learned a ton already, and there is such a tremendous wealth of knowledge here, that I really felt becoming a member of the community, and hopefully, in time, sharing my own experiences would be a really good way of saying thanks!  Keep up the good work Head-Fi !

There is in souls a sympathy with sounds:
And as the mind is pitch'd the ear is pleased
With melting airs, or martial, brisk or grave;
Some chord in unison with what we hear

Is touch'd within us, and the heart replies.”

The 990's are nice. Not to start a debate, but there is a definite "burn-in" with these that was noticed by myself and my son.  Very thin sounding at first listen, was my first impression.  Great separation compared to anything else I had ever listened to, but not at all what I was hoping for.  The bass bias that is commonly reported with these definitely didn't exist on first listen, and the high end was fatiguing after a while.  I was actually a bit embarrassed about the quality of the audio, balance wise, and was afraid I had made a bad purchase.  My son had the same impression.  Fast forward 3 months.  I definitely felt these had changed a good deal from that first listen.  The lows had definitely materialized, and the highs seemed to round out a bit.  It was when my son listed to these again for the second time, after about a three months gap, that his face curled into a huge smile, and confessed that they sounded awesome, and totally ruined his impression of his own headphones.  There is a slight recession in the mid range, but I only barely notice it depending on what I'm listening to.  Usually they just sound great!  The only other thing I noticed about these, is that their position on your head can give the impression that there is an issue with the volume balance between the left and right ear.  Upon some testing I've come to the conclusion that the source is actually the huge ear cups.  If they are positioned differently on each ear, there can seem to be a difference in the balance.  The trick was to make each cup touch the back of my ear, as a reference.  Problem solved.

Thanks for the welcome.
