Are there any outsstanding albums that far exceed others in production quality. I'm beginging to replace my cd's and have noticed that there are many many pressings of the same album. Will one be better thatn the other, and are there any Dead albums that are known to be better than another?

They just released all the Dead albums remastered , and w/ HDCD. They all sound great, because they always had the top of the line gear, mostly built specifically for them. My Favs are: Go To Nassau, Nightfall of Diamonds, the new remastered Europe '72, and Steppin' Out with the Grateful Dead - England '72. All the new remasters have added tracks, and all that I mentioned are HDCD. You can't do any better for live sound then these live recordings from '72-80's.

If you can find them, the 1/2 speed masters of American Beauty, Mars Hotel and Terrapin Station are extremely good. They've been out of print for a long time, though.

Andrew, You're too hard on yourself! Thnks for the info, I plan on looking at the CD's you mentioned for my portable outfit. Turntables just look funny while you're jogging, not to mention they sound funny.

This is not the movie staring John Cussack.

For the music and the performances, these are must haves:

Live Dead
American Beauty
Workingman's Dead
Europe '72

For technical quality, I always thought Blues for Allah was extremely well done. I once traded a copy of this album for a copy of ELP's Tarkus. What was I thinking?

I traded my bong for my first copy of "Europe 72". An excellent trade in my opinion.
