hey i know this is opening up an age old debate about the merits of each particular headphone. i have no doubt that both are great, but i wanted to know which one would be better for my case.

i listen to a lot of indie rock, which is usually either lots of acoustic (think death cab for cutie) or dance-like (franz ferdinand-ish).

i've heard that the SR60s are better for rock, but i'm wondering if this means alternative rock, which is a far cry from indie.

i'm currently awaiting a set of 497s, which should be here in a couple days, and i have not been able to test either one.

btw, this is probably the best forum i have ever been to. ive been surfing it for a cpl months now, but this is the first time i have been compelled to register and post. may this be the first of many.

If you can stand making a small tradeoff in comfort for better sound, then definately go with the Grado's. With the various pad options out there, you shouldbe able to find something that makes them a bit more comfortable than the stock pads. The Sennheiser HD414 pads are a popular choice...

i just a/b'd 497's and sr-80's on sound of settling and i'd give the edge to the grados but not by much. It's actually a pretty tough comparison because the grados seem to be more seneitive so i foerget that the senns are being played quieter.

I haven't heard the HD497, but it's hard to go wrong with the SR-60 and modded HD414 pads.

I haven't had a chance to listen to the Senn's but I use Grado SR-60's, and listen to a lot of indie rock as well. I think they sound incredible, and can't imagine anything in the price range can sound better.

Indie rock music will sound the same as any other rock/pop music through your headphones. They are still using guitar, bass, and drums with vocals, just not on a major label correct? Unless you are listening to super lo-fi type stuff in which case you would probably want a more forgiving headphone.

BTW, Death Cab (Atlantic) and Franz Ferdinand (Sony) are not indie rock.

actually, death cab was signed on barsuk for over half a decade before being picked up by atlantic late last year. they have not made a debut on atlantic yet and still remain one of the biggest indie bands of the past couple years.

franz ferdinand is signed on domino, an indie label in the uk that has also signed other well known indie artists such as pavement, elliott smith, the magnetic fields, and the kills. they have since been signed by epic (sony) for their next album.

they are probably not the best examples, but i was afraid people wouldn't understand what i was looking for if i mentioned relatively obscure bands.

anyways, thanks for the help. i'm really regretting my hd497 purchase now. do you guys think i should keep them for some other application, or should i just chuck'em in favor of the grados?

at least listen to 497's before you make up your mind. some people like them better than the SR-60's, and it really just comes down to subjectivity.
