I have a 10G iPod and hated the stock buds so I said, what the hec lets go with some etys. I bought the ER-4P with the S adapter. I dont have a problem with the fit but I just didn't find the sound incredible. It was good, dont get me wrong, but after all the hype I expected to be blown away which I wasn't. I know the whole bass argument has been discussed. The bass was there but there was no impact. The other reason im getting rid of them is that I realized that most of the time I want to hear the outside world. Please dont give me the seal crap because I know I had a seal, it made that pop thing when I took them out.

So here is my problem, I don't know what I should buy now. I am going to have like 340 or so in store credit so I guess thats my price limit. I don't have an amp but I do plan on getting one in the near future. My first thought was the SR225. I heard it runs great out of a portable. I would be getting those modded pads so I guess the comfort thing isin't going to be a huge problem. My issues with the SR225 are: I need it to have a mini jack and I don't want to carry around an adapter, which, lets admit it, is annoying as hell. I am not sure if I need an amp on these headphones either.

The SR225 are the main headphones im considering but I also like the HD600 but with a 300 OHM impedence it might be a little tuff even with an amp on my iPod. If anyone has the HD600 and an iPod please let me know how its working out.

I do plan on upgrading my source when Christmas comes around but until them im going to bum it with my iPod. If there are any other headphones which work great out of an iPod either with or without an iPod please tell me about them. I dont know which AKG is any good for the iPod so any help there would be appreciated also. Thanks for any help that you might be able to provide.

HI: I use the SR-225 portable and use the grado adapter with no problem. I used a twist tie to make the wire in the adapter very short.

Considering the other portable complications with the Grado cords (non-flexibility, length), an adapter doesn't seem like such a big deal. That said, at the least the original iPods have a somewhat weak inner circle of plastic around the headphone input. Be careful with anything that pulls on it.

My 225's arrive tomorrow. I can let you know how they sound off the iPod unamped. My 80's sound great at about 80% volume.

I have been looking around and I have aquired a love for the CD3000. Will it work pretty well out of the headphone jack on the iPod and maybe with an amp or do I really need a better source. BTW thanks wall, ill send him a PM tommarow.

Just curious Knocturnal what you're using on your iPod? WAV/AIFF's, MP3's, etc.? You're going pretty high in the phones department to run off a portable (with possible/probable lossy compression). Some should handle WMA lossless, a FLAC portable is coming up, and there's always straight WAV/AIFF, but otherwise there are other weak links. On the good side is the excellent iPod output.

And yeah, I've been eyeing the 3000's also.

I'm also eyeing the 3000's, but mainly as my dorm phones for the next 4 years....

FYI, the 3000's come with a 1/4 jack so you will need a 1/8 adapter if you plan to run it directly to the iPod. I'm also planning to run the 3000's connected to a supplementary amp running to my 30GB iPod.

As for quality of mp3's, approximately 40% of mine are at 320kbit, but most are at 192kbit. Personally, I can't tell the difference in quality, but I am starting to rip my music at high bitrates in preparation of obtaining high quality headphones such as the CD3000.

Hey psxguy85. As a big believer in [proper] MP3 compression, I support it. But I've recently started experimenting with FLAC. It is (or any other lossless compression), not supported on the iPod, but my recent fun experiments have the difference between --aps, --ape, and --api much less than any of them and a lossless setup. Even with my minor equipment. Just a suggestion to give it a try.

I have the D66 and SR225s. Straight from a D25S, unamped, the D66 win for rock n rap. The 225s have a little more transparency, but the unamped lows are dominated by the D66.

What I mean by this is that you should a) consider D66 or b) consider the SR60.

BTW, 20db isolation vs 0 isolation is gonna shock you.

I am using LAME ALT+PRESET+INSANE. I tried using extreme but all my songs got this weird electronic distortion. The quality is great with LAME. Some of the songs I bought off iTunes are in AAC 128. I like the CD3000 because of the comfort and the great sound but I am not sure about the size.

. I also cant for the life of me understand why all these headphones have 1/4 inch jacks, they are big and there is no increase in sound quality. Thanks for th help.

AFAIK, IIRC, the Sony MDR-CD3000s come with a 1/8" jack with an adapter that twists on to become a 1/4" jack. To use those portably may pose a problem due to the cable length. I don't remember exactly what it is/was, but I just remember that the cable length was really long compared to Grados.

Congrats on the 2000th post vwap

. I am happy about the 1/8 plug because I dont need to lug around an adapter. The cord is 10ft. I am not sure if it is flextible or not, but if it is I will just use a twistie tie and cut the lengh in half. How about the actual size of the headphones, is it out of control
