Elleven Acoustics Epsilon G1 vs Symphones V8.1 vs Turbulent X vs Nhoord Red I can barely keep up with them all! Anyway I'm looking into raw drivers for my own headphone project which will be completely different than Grado, more like Fostex TH-XXX or Denon DXX00 series but larger enclosure (but Fostex bio-cellulose drivers are not easy to source raw that I can find.) Ive owned Grado SR-60/80 some years ago and enjoyed the easy to power and dynamic sound but disliked the rough and harsh highs and bass that drops off a cliff after the midbass hump (like many mini-monitor speakers). Which of the above mentioned drivers have a great midrange for acoustic instruments and female vocals with smooth highs and well extended but not overly pronounced bass?

Are you going open-backed or closed?

You might want to check out the awesome customs that were made using Elleven Acoustica drivers, Audeze headbands and LCD2-style cups a little while back... @wormsdriver had a pair and can speak to specifics, as can @Konstantin690 who was, I believe, the originator...

Thanks for the link. I'm doing a semi-closed but vented with multiple types of damping to tune it. Totally custom driver housing ear-cup section. Its a long term project. I'm not starting it till this winter or spring when I start prototyping. I don't want to go into too much detail but its a pretty radical design. I may produce it in quantity to sell if I come up with a product I'm satisfied with. Nothing massive, small home production.

That sounds like a lot of fun! Don't be shy, share your progress when you start!

It will be awhile before I can even start it as I'm moving in a couple months to Washington state. Next step is to aquire more headphones and amps for a baseline reference. It's a design I've had in mind for a few years. It's a rectangular design, sort of like Stax with a big internal volume and made of wood. Obviously I have to be careful not to make it too heavy. I would love to make the gimbal assembly out of polished Bronze, but I would need to pay to have those parts custom machined so I'm not sure how practical it will be. The ear cup assembly I have in mind is rather rediculiously complex for a headphone as I plan to use similar construction methods to older Sonus Faber speakers that were designed by Franco Serblin as a homage to him and named as such. The current idea I have for a company name is Violon Rouge as a homage to one of my favorite movies, The Red Violin. So this project idea could be referred to as "The Franco Serblin Homage" by Violon Rouge.

Bronze is very heavy, even these weight almost as much as Audeze LCD......

Also, I'm pretty sure that you can't use someones name on a product without paying royalties.

I'm aware Bronze is heavy, thats part of why I said I'm not sure how practical it would be yet. I've seen those Grado style Bronze (or brass?) gimbals before, but couldnt find them for sale anywhere. Franco Serblin is dead btw. Though I suppose his family or Sonus Faber could sue me if they want to go through the trouble of sueing some guy making a handful of headphones at home.
