Of course! The thing sound better amped, but it isn't much different unamped. It's not going to cripple the sound. The amp takes a good sound and improves it.

Without an amp go with the SR60s (bottom end fills out better without extra power and sightly more efficient). With an amp go with the MS1s ($0-10 more depending on shipping). It's hard for me to recommend the SR80s in either situation with slightly better options.

If you plan on portable use, be forewarned: The sound leakage can be a problem in a populated open environment, the long thick cable may be a hassle, and you WILL look like a '50s space man.

Yeah, the cable length is almost long enough to walk around my room with. Crazy, too long for my preferences.

Best advise I can give you is bring your discman and try it yourself, your ears will tell you if it is worth it or not. If you cann't demo it, find the seller who has return policy.

The SR80 has very decent sound when unamped. Its an efficient headphone. Get SR60 if you listen to pop, SR80 if you like rock and bass.
