please help me my fellow headphone bretheren and sisters

i am desperate

i did a bit of research about this a few years ago, and found out for some reason that grado don't export the SR40's outside the U.S. for some reason and that merchants were not allowed to supply anywhere outside the states.

can anyone help me, because i live in the uk and would love to get my hands on some or have they been fully replaced by the igrado's?

As far as I remember, they've been put out of production years ago. Any problems with iGrados, SR60 or MS1 as (better) alternatives?

The only way you will find them is used and they are quite rare. Also the plastic housing they used had a detremental effect on the sound and they were not so great sounding. I believe the igrado's sound better.

I've fortunately found one unused ("NOS") on italian ebay. They can had been astonishing for the price at the time (ten years ago), but now there is better for less money. They sound somewhat "good", but the plastic housing causes coloration on mids (the bass indees is very very good). At the time maybe it has been the very first step in "high-end" balanced headphone, but today I will not desperate to search one of them.

bye

I'm fortunate enough to salvage a pair with one working driver by replacing the dead driver with a SR60 driver.

The don't sound as good as the SR60, not even iGrado. From a pure sonic perspective, it is easier if you just go with iGrado. Hope this helps

... yeah the SR40 had some wierd midrange coloration from the earcup housing that I didn't care for. IMHO the iGrado or SR60 are a better value.

Actually, I have 2 pair of sr-40. They sound very good for what was an entry level headphone. They are not as good as sr-80 or sr-325 (owned both and regret selling the 325's) Each phone in Grado's line has its signature 'sound'. Though its more like a tightening up of the sound.

Going for a pair of Sr-40's is a cool quest, good luck with it, but if you get the chance to, try iGrado's or sr-80's.

i just thought that when grado anounced the igrado tht it would be the same sort of thing, instead of that horrible, ugly thing that they currently have on the market.

at least the sr40 looks/looked civilised!

The SR40 looks way uglier on the head due to the headband construction that makes the earcups stick out like potatoes on ears. They only look relatively nice off head.

Trust me on this one. I would wear the iGrado over the SR40 on the street 7 days a week and twice on Sundays.
