I've been considering new cans for home use with my portable disc player. Right now I primarily use PX-100's but I do not have an amp although I do plan on buying one with in the next year.

A friend has the SR-80's which he uses unamped with his MP3 player which I like a lot but the MS-1s are about the same price and I was wondering if they would be a better choice?

I have owned the sr80 and own the ms1 now I gave my sr80s to a friend, and one thing that I like better with the ms1 is how they are so clear and not ear shattering bright compared to the sr80, my friend loves the sr80s, but then again i have not let him listen to my ms1's yet though

I think the ms1's are a better headphone. Quite a good value for the money actually.

I have a sr60 and sr225 along with ms1. So I have not heard the sr80 but from what I have heard I can say I am impressed with the ms1.

MS1's are a good value. Although I havent listened to the Sr-80's, It might be a little uncomfortable due to the strong trebles. (as heard in this forum) Overall, the MS1's do a very nice job acting as home headphones for me. OH and free shipping!

I A/B'ed a pair of vintage SR80 with a current production MS1...

These SR80 had a much more involving signature than the MS1, the latter was just a bit lifeless and the mids weren't what the SR80 had in store. IMO, the MS1 is a one-trick pony, hell for $100, I would rather save up a little for a mighty pair of SR100.

The MS-1 comes with the Grado Comfy pads which can easily be changed for bowls or flats or 414s or whatever for fun and comfort. They also give you a choice if 1/4 or 1/8" plug and that's cool. They also use the same materials in their construction as the SR-125. The difference in sound is that the MS-1 was designed to be more neutral and analytical than the Grado line and are somewhat more suited for a wider range of musical styles.

....and they can be addictive.

I'm sure both are suited for rock. As F107plus5 said above, the MS1's can be used for many other types of music. ATM, I'm listening to rap, but not much bass.

You said you're listening to rap, and "not much bass".

Are you saying the MS1's dont produce much bass, or the music you're listneing to doesn't have much bass? I'm not much of a rap/hip-hop guy, but Bob Marley is close; it's some-what bassy music.

I just listened to a very bassy song, and found out that the bass was satisfactory. It's certainly not over-powering, but the MS1's do a good job of reproducing the bass. Oh and Bob Marley sounds great!

Thanks. Have you heard the SR60/80's by any chance?

If I HAD to reach for a CD, it would be Bob Marley, and he is what I listen to a good portion of the time.

Just trying to find out if the SR60/80's or MS1's would be the best choice for me.

out of those you mentioned.. sr 80's are supposed to have the stronger bass compared to sr 60's. I've also heard that sr 80's are just sr60's with bowls but don't quote me on that. Ms-1 I've heard are more neutral compared to grados.

Yeah. This is my first day researching Grado's, and from what John Grado mentioned, the 80's have more bass. I still don't know what "fun" and "neutral" sounds like, or is supposed to sound like, but I continually hear these adjectives used..
