I am having a problem with my pair of Grado SR-60s. The wire just inside of the plastic near the plug is disconnected(solder probably broke). The only way to hear it is to put the plug into an input and put slight pressure sideways on plastic just above the plug.

Obviously putting constant pressure on the side is no way to listen to my ipod, so I have been using my Sennheiser 580s. But I would like to fix my 60s. I have had them for 3 years, so the warranty is over. I was thinking of cutting it open near the plug to see if I could do anything to fix it, but I thought it would be good to check with the experts here first before doing anything stupid.

Any ideas on how fix my Grado, or advice on how to open it without making a stupid mistake? Thanks for any help.

Sorry I can't offer any advice, but you are using HD580's with your iPod? My iPod can't drive them worth crap, and even at 100% volume it's still not close to being a decent listenable volume.

Hmm, weird. I get plenty of loudness from the 580s. I can easily hurt my ears if I turn it up to loud. The sound isn't perfect because I think the 580s need an amp for full frequency reproduction.

Thanks for you suggestion Chadwick. I would like to try this, however I couldn't find the headwize article you were talking about. I found an article about mods to grado headphones, but I couldn't find anything about the color of the wires.
