I've tried utilizing the bass boost feature on my stereo, and even at the lowest setting, I get noticable bass distortion (usually in the left ear.) I believe I've read that you shouldn't use bass boost with Grado headphones, but i'm not certain. Can anyone clarify that? Thanks.

i personally find the grados to be such well-balanced headphones for what they are that i never use the bass boost. they have plenty of low down response with most sources. haven't heard anything about not using it with grados though.

It's difficult to make generalities about bass boosts. The only one I'll make is they suck. Expect distortion in most cases.

I agree with blessingx. I used to use bass boost on my stereo before I found out what good sound was, and I realized that not only does it distort, but it just sounds like crap. I hate the artificial sound of bass boost.

Well to be specefic, it was an equalizer preset that boosted the bass some. In general the equalizer made the sound a lot fuller...but then we have the bass distortion to deal with. My stereo, sadly, only has preset equalizer settings. You can't customize them.

yeah, bass boost sucks. Question, what kind of source are you using? Chances are that's the real culprit regarding distortion, not the headphones. Try the headphones in a few different sources to make sure though.

If you want bass boost, I suggest a meta42. Works awesome with the SR-60.

I remember I had to condition myself to not using bass boost when I first got my SR-60s. Using the stock sony buds, bass boost was nearly a requirement, cos they had no life otherwise. Once you get used to no mega bass though, the bass becomes much more defined, without sounding "bloated', if you like. In other words, the bass is still there but better presented and tighter.

my grado sr80 handles bass boost quite good, it distorts minimally even when i almost max up the bass on my sound card.

That's the unit. I'm using the headphones jack, with the gold-plated adapter which was proviced with the Grados.

I have an older AIWA mini-system that was considerably more money that the unit you have here. Take my word from it, the headphone output (and speaker output for that matter) is HORRIBLE. Do not pass judgement on any headphone (or speaker) based on it's performance with any AIWA equipment - it's just not worth it.

Well, you have to understand, I'm not really using the equalizer for bass boost, just the fuller sound. The distortion is a sad side-effect... To be specefic, it makes a kind of...rattling sound when it distorts. Like a combination of a rattle and a click.

An amp and source upgrade will eliminate any need for bass boost, it really brings the bass out on the SR60's.
