I've been using Grado SR-80s for quite awhile and really like the sound. I listen to practically only all forms of metal, hardcore, and some indie pop. I was wondering what everyone's opinions would be on upgrading to SR 225s? I've heard those are absolutely fantastic for rock and I really liked the 80s a lot so I'm intrigued by what the 225s should sound like. Also, I'd be using these 225s from lots of different sources, but primarily from an un-amped nomad zen xtra. Will that sound ok or do the 225s need an amp? Thanks for any advice.

my ms-2 can reach (imo) ear-splitting volumes unamped out of my xtra. the 225 should be no problem.

heck, the xtra can even power my 501 satisfactorily unamped.

you need a 1/4th - 1/8th adapter though.
