I saw a pair of headphones labeled "Grado SR-200". Yes, this is what it says on the headphones themselves, it's not a typo. Supposedly they are several years old. Is this model superior to what I assume is the newer SR-225? They look exactly the same.

Yes, They are a different headphone. That is a Joseph Grado, not a John Grado design. Grab it if you can get it for a reasonable price. In some ways, it's an introduction to the HP-1000. That was the headphone that got me going in a big way.

Grado had a line with a sr-100/200 and possibly a sr-300. When I bought my first pair of sr-225s it was at about the time of the model changeover. I listened to a pair of sr-200s briefly and I DONT REMEMBER MUCH,but I think they were mellower and not as exciting as the 225s. I WOULDNT CHARACTERIZE THEM AS SUPERIOR. This depends what you are looking for. Back then I could have had the sr-200s for $40 less and I bought the 225s. I saw a pair on ebay, if the price doesnt go crazy, I may bid on them.

The SR-200 doesn't have as much brightness as the SR-225. This is good. The SR-200 is closer to the neutral presentation of the HP-1000. It won't draw as much attention to itself, particularly in a short audition. Where it pulls ahead of the John Grado design is in long-term listening. It's more musical than the SR-225, in the sense that it's more faithful to the source. I sold my SR-200's after I got my HP-1's. It's one of the only headphones I really regret having sold.

Sorry to hear that

I recently traded them off to another headfier, he apparently loves them. I didn't care for them with the bowl pads, still bright and awfully painful to wear for more than 30 minutes, i actually only used them a handful of times. I still have the SR100's which sound blissful with comfy pads, plus they are very comfortable since the headband has a bar in it (as did the 200's), making it very easy to flex out to the shape of your head. It totally blows away the 60's and 80's in terms of....everything. I definitely will never sell or trade off the SR100's...i even have the original box for them! I saw someone post up the Sr300's for sale once, i can't remember if it was on head-fi or ebay.

Oh yeah: the 100's have red lettering on the earcups so there!
