Grado Labs out of Brooklyn New York has released a new special edition headphone that harkens to the days of Joseph Grado and the HP1/HP2/HP3 series of headphones.

New chassis, new drivers, new cable system and a promise that Grado will keep innovating within their system.

HP100 SE
  • Frequency Response: 3.5 Hz – 51.5 kHz
  • THD: <0.1% @ 100db
  • SPL 1mW: 117dB
  • Nominal Impedance: 38ohms
  • Driver Size: 52mm
  • Driver Matched dB: .04 dB
  • Weight: 520 grams (No Cable & G-Cush)

I myself am very happy about this change from Grado. I've been asking for a modern HP1000 for quite some time and I've already forked over my money in hopes that these are my "final" Grado for a while.

Hoping they run this can for awhile. Looking forward to your thoughts. Finally a Grado with detachable cables!

This is out of my price range but I am excited to see Grado finally release a headphone with detachable cables (I don't count the wireless GW100/X cans which feature wired listening via a single 3.5mm).... can't wait to see this trickle down a little further down the line where I buy. :)

Is dap is enough for this one or need amp? Thank you!
Likely 'enough'. Is 'enough' good enough for you? If you want 'better', use a dedicated headphone amplifier.

If we base on the technical characteristics of these headphones, then we can confidently say that even a not very powerful DAP will be sufficient.
These headphones have a high SPL and not very high impedance.
It is quite possible that once headphones produced for portable devices were not perceived by manufacturers and buyers as a high-end product. But in recent years, the DAP level has reached fantastic heights.
Therefore, I think that in this case Grado Labs was also aimed at users of portable players.

Nice to see Grado experiment with a different type of driver. From looks I like the wooden cups a bit better, but for me it’s primarily about weight.
Could not care less about removable cables though… fortunately the length of the cables on my other Grados is just about perfect for my needs, I also don’t need other termination than SE. Others will obviously have different needs and might value this change.
Hopefully it materializes soon here in EU.

While I love Grado headphones and have been purchasing them since the beginning, its time for them to stop posting frequency response specs that are useless with no + and - tolerance. Also, specing drivers at .04dB tolerance without specifying how that is measured is useless. No one can consistently manufacture drivers that are even close to .04dB tolerance or even reliably measure that close a tolerance.

Why don't use Grado connectors on the driver capsule? The most headphones manufactures (Sennheiser, Beyerdynamic, AKG, Austrian.Audio, Focal, Denon, Fostec, Audio-Technica, etc) use them!
