Zanth i'm looking for your impressions regarding HD800 and PS1000. Those two are probably the best dynamic headphones in production. My ultimate goal is to have them both powered by a GS-X and a WA22

i keep saying everywhere that the ps1000 and hd800 are not the best headphones. per the above post: they are indeed the best headphones in "production". everything i think is better you would have to buy used. or be lucky enough to have got them when they were new.

piotr, so i couldn't really tell if you really like the ps1000 or not. at first it semmed like you were a little let down. then it seemed like you maybe changed your mind?

Add Grado GS1000i to the bunch and remove the HD800 eventually. Then you have the best two in production.

I'd give a credit to the Ultrasone Edition 8 as well. Too much hype about the HD800 nowadays.

Nah, the GS1000i can't even begin to touch the HD800. It's not even a contest. I don't care what that recent review says. No need to waste time with Ultrasone either.

Give 10 people not in to headphones a listening test between the GS1000i and HD800. 9 out of 10 will choose the HD800.

Recently, I've invited some of my hifi friends to my place for a listen to my headphone rig. Most actually prefer the PS1000 and ED8 over HD800. They find HD800 lack slightly in dynamic as compare to the two. I believe it a matter of preference.

Some of the lastest post lead me to think this is just a small preview of what will happend once sommeone post a full and complete review of PS-1000 vs HD-800.

I imagine that will be the thread of the year...

I've heard the PS1000, the HD800 and the GS1000i (all single-ended) and earlier on said I like them all. I'd have to put the first two on a pretty even par, each offering their own flavor of beautiful "full" sound. I can easily live with them both as they can really fit whatever mood I might be in. As good as the GS1000i's are (and they really are good), I think they require more concentration and effort than the PS1000 and the HD800, both of which just seem to take care of you right off the bat (perhaps the PS1000 a little sooner than the HD800 as the HD800s seem to require more initial burn in to start opening up), or to steal a line from Zanth, while the PS1000s got me at the first hello, the HD800s got me after the first drink. Same outcome in the end

Likewise, it really depends on your mood how you're going to react to the GS1000i, assuming of course you have the right kind of amp and source. I'll probably get into trouble by saying that the GS1000i has a little bit more of a (stereotypical) Central European serious character - think Joseph Conrad - a great writer, but you have be in the right mood if you really want to get the most out of him, while the HD800 is more "German" (d'oh!) in character- think Mercedes Benz- you feel the luxury and the great build and can just wallow in it and bliss out listening to it. The PS1000 is the most "American/British" sounding if the three. Great sound, a bit brash (in a good way) and easy going - a make no bones about it sound, minor cosmetic flaws (like easily nicked metal cups), but performance-wise, despite the slightly ( I wouldn't say greatly) different presentation than the HD800, definitely on a par with the Senns. Please no one get offended with my analogies as my parents were Polish, German-British, and I was born here in the United States!

So, when all's said and done, I rate it a tie between the PS1000 and the HD800 with the GS1000i, as good as they are, back a ways in third, mainly because I seem to have to work a bit too hard to get the most out of them. I'm just at that point where I'd rather let the cans do the work for me rather than the other way around, While this may have to do with their somewhat less immediate sound presentation, I think it also has to do with the driver itself - as I mentioned in an earlier post, in my view, the PS1000 and GS1000i are not like each other at all - night and day. While the price of the Senns and PS1000 are significantly higher, I think they are worth it relative to the difference in performance vis-a-vis the GS1000i's - not that the GS1000i's are cheap either! - but this is definitely not a case of diminishing marginal returns; both the Senns and PS1000 are the real thing.

I will sound off. The PS1000 is the best headphone I have ever had in my systems. I am a former R10 owner but after getting the PS1000s I turned them loose. I'm not saying the PS1000s are better than the R10s for everyone and every situation. I paired the R10s with the Singlepower MPX 3 Slam because it is a good match. I paired the PS 1000s with the EAR HP4 because it is a great match. So each headphone was set up in an optimal situation to enhance their performance. I loved the R10s treble, mids/voices, and tone. But the PS1000s had better balance, wider soundstage, more depth(as much as a headphone could provide anyway) and had a warm organic sound. Did I have the best setup for the R10s? Well no, I'm sure there is better out there like some of the balanced systems. While the MPX3 Slam is no slouch with the R10s, I was not willing to invest tons of money in a setup to bring the R10s performance up to their potential. Plus, the selling price for the R10s just helped me turn them loose and not look back. With the PS1000s and the great synergy it has with the EAR HP4 I now have a setup that has me not wanting for more. However, I just got the JH13 Pro so we will see how it can stack up, so I'm not quite off the headphone merry go round just yet.

do you guys think the difference between the gs1000 and ps1000 is as big a difference between the hd650 and hd800? i really don't. since the hd800 is simply better than the hd650.

i really think the gs1000 is a lot different than the ps1000. i wouldn't say the ps1000 is simply outright better. different. with the hp4 the gs1000 is a very nice headphone but i can see why it is not everyones taste. the ps1000 is a lot more resolving and has a bigger soundstage to me. the gs1000 exagerates the music in a very pleasent way to me. the nuances are there but you really have to concentrate on the gs1000. the ps1000 is less fatiguing.

most of us own a lot more than one pair of phones. i would have to keep my gs1000 if i got the ps1000. besides i cannot even seem to get a ps1000. i only exchange cash for product hand to hand so that makes it a little hard.
even though i don't think the ps1000 is the best ever i will have them as soon as i can. i will also have the hd800. to me it is a collection. i can't collect loudspeakers for obvious reasons so i think headphones are a good thing to collect.

kclone, i would not have sold the r10 unless for financial reasons. even if you think the ps1000 is better. the r10 is like a '57 vet. i wouldn't get rid of mine ever. they are classic collector items and sound pretty good to boot.

I haven't heard the other Senns, so I can't comment on that. You're right - the GS1000i is simply an entirely different phone than the PS1000. If you collect phones, if only from a stylistic point, the GS1000i's wood cups look nicer than the PS1000 at least to me. (that said, the PS1000s sure feel a lot better than the GS1000i's - I really like their heft in my hands and how comfortable they are on my ears; the GS1000i's now feel too light when I wear them. The real kicker for me though is, as you said, the fact that the GS1000s require much more effort than the PS1000s. For me, I've gotten spoiled with the ease of the PS1000s, which has dampened my enthusiasm for the GS1000i's. The PS1000 has a much, much fuller and integrated sound than the GS1000i. But at the end of the day, of course, it's what you like that counts and not what others think...
