A lot of above-average headphone prices got all wacky lately.

On the one hand, there's been this rash of orthos showing up at that auction site and selling for half to a third what they went for just a couple months ago. I picked up two Yamaha YH-1's for a total cost that wouldn't have gotten me either of them recently.

And then Stax electrets - which are not the best electrets by a whole long stretch - have been going for positively silly prices. Hundreds of dollars. They aint bad but they aint worth more than $60 or so. Maybe $80 in pristine condition. $100 new, in the box, seal unbroken.

^Hmm...does not look like shill bidding to me.
Looks like the winner used BIN instead.

The last pairs of PS-1 headphones were said to have actually sold new to the tune of $2200 from the German market, which is more expensive than initially offerred.
Seller may have incurred import duty fees buying from overseas, which this too may have factored in to sale price. If this PS was purchased later in the batch run, and imported originally with duty fees, seller paid much more for his/her pair than someone preordering from TTVJ for $1400 in '05. Hindsight is always 20/20. Often, sellers list fixed price formats with "make offer" option. Perhaps this is to help handle hagglers and low ballers better. The R10 auction currently up on the Bay is similar.

irregardless,
Nice get Abe, the PS is a steller can. I sold my first PS for $900 back in late 2005 and it was very hard to find a buyer. Yeah, the prices for limited edition phones seems to demand a higher premium for sure. Just look at the R10, L3000, HE90, OI, Q, K1000, etc

This happens when gear moves from being something you use to being a collectible. Sucks for people who are more interested in using stuff.

The good news is that manufacturers do pay attention to the market and will probably respond with more high-end offerings. This is a good thing for us.

John Grado, are you paying attention?

Damn....I'd pay 900...but recent prices for this can are out of this world.
