If you play around with the headphones postioning it makes a huge difference i tried the way on meier audio and it makes a huge difference, shrill highs gone, soundstage alot bigger, it sounds alot more neutral, everything sounds better and this is using the infamous bowl pads. Every grado user should try this, basically the headphones are forward and lower so the back of the earcup touches your ear. Heres the link http://www.meier-audio.com/ then goto tips and tricks.

neggy, what pads are you using? bowls? flat? comfies? unmodded senns? vwaps? all of these have very different effects on the sound of grados, so I'm sure the effect of the positioning has to do with the pads as well.

Go to mall-fi and checkout the ad for Vwap's cut and dyed senn pads. I should be getting my pair soon. They are supposed to be super comfy and about 90% of the sound of the famous but no longer produced flat pads from the Joe Grado era.

Neggy, this seems sort of like the opposite of what I like to do with the bowl pads. I like to move them back so that the back of the pads are behind the back of my ears (as opposed to touching the back of the ears). This way, the drivers are closer to the ear and the sound is closer to the flats. You're right about one thing, though, and that is that the soundstage is better with your way of wearing them.

I use modded Senn pads on the SR325s, and I've found that setting them forward cuts the high treble and a bit of detail while moving me away from the music rather than enlarging the soundstage. It doesn't cut the brightness though, because the upper mid peak is still there. I prefer to have them sit back and somewhat low to keep the detail and treble in tact. I wish the driver could angle upwards a bit more to shoot into my ear even more directly, because sometimes I find that it just improves the sound overall if I angle them myself for a bit. As for the bowl pads, they are circumaural for me and don't seem to move much or change sound characteristics a whole lot when I do try to move them.
