my third/final GS1000 post/question, I have narrowed to a Pico or RA-1 amp, both are the right size for my needs, and would also drive a Senn 650 or ATH. Is the pico strong enough to power the GS1000? The RA-1 is less expensive but has the GS1K synergy supposedly but the pico is more sophisticated and powerful... maybe there is something else? requirements $200-$500, non-tube, portable or slightly portable and should be able to drive those listed cans

I think that you are in trouble from the get go. I don't think that there is an amp that is remotely portable that can do a truly good job with the 650s, and if said amp exists, it is definitely not the RA-1 or a pico. Neither of those amps have the output or power to get behind high Z phones and drive them. Maybe they will present an improvement in the 650s over no amp, but they will not show the potential of the phones.

I can't comment on the GS-1k other than to say that the RA-1 was designed for the RS-1 and considering that the GS-1k is a marked departure from the traditional grado sound, the RA-1 might not have great synergy. I have not heard this combo, but it is something you should think about.
